A Research on the coverge of sports in 3 media ie Internet sites(2), TV channels(4) and Print Media(HT and TOI) in Feburary 2013
“NEW HORIZONS OF SPORTS JOURNALISM- A Study”
This article draws on results of a
survey examining the sports coverage in newspapers, TV and internet sites in
Delhi, India during the month February 2013. The study sheds light on the
arrangement of themes, patterns of construction and further aspects of quality
of the sports reporting in three different types of media. While globalized
reporting increases and journalistic accuracy decreases across the globe,
sports represent crucial subject matters in media reporting. The key results of
this study show that newspapers covered (229) nearly double of the coverage on
TV (107) and one half of that on TV (174). Cricket (23.2), football (20.6),
Tennis (20), Hockey (13.5), chess (10.9) and Golf (4.8) shared the major
coverage in Print Media. Other sporting events were covered by print media only
to the extent 6.6%. The gender distribution of coverage was in the range of
15-22.7%, with internet (15%), TV (22%) and Print media (22.7%). The coverage
of international matches was 66.1% on net, 82.2% on TV and 52.9%. The remaining
33.9% on net, 17.8 on TV, 47.1% was national/domestic sports coverage.
In most countries, live broadcasts
of huge sports events generate enormous viewing figures and reach globally
impressive market shares. Yet, despite the fact that a sport reporting is
apparently characterized by globalization, a national perspective and even
local focus can be noticed as well especially in print media. So far, the
coverage of sports has been examined extensively with regards to television,
while the press and internet remain under-researched. This article will fill
the gap within existing scholarly research and suggest answers to these
questions.
