Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024: Indian Team Beat Japan In A Thrilling Contest

  The defending champions India defeated Japan in the 2 nd semi-finals of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 played at Rajgir Sports Complex, Bihar on 19 th November. Indian team began the first quarter with aggression earning a penalty corner which was superbly saved by Japanese goalkeeper Yu Kudo. The hosts showed aggression right from the word go putting enough pressure, but the Japanese defense and Kudo kept their calm. At the end of the first quarter, the score remained 0-0. It was an aggressive start for the Indian team in the second quarter. The hosts earned 3 back to penalty corners but it did not yield any results.  The Indian Women’s badminton team created history as they defeated Thailand in a thrilling 3-2 win during the finals of the Badminton Asia Team Championship played at Shah Alam, Malaysia on 18 th February 2024. It was an ideal start for the Indian team as PV Sindhu looked in great control defeating Kathegong in two straight games. Sindhu showed attacking skills winning by 21-12, 21-12 to help India 1-0 lead. The women’s doubles pairing of Tressa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand edged past higher ranked Thai pair of Jongkolphan and Rawinda in three thrilling games. The first game saw both pairs fight for each point before Jolly and Gayatri won it by 21-16. It was another closely fought affair in the second game as both pairs showed spirit before the Thai pair won it by 21-18.  The Indian women’s hockey team went down fighting against 4-time Champion Australia in the 2 nd semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games competition played at the National Exhibition Centre on Friday. It was an ideal start for the Indian team as they earned a quick penalty corner in the initial stages of the match. Vandana Katria missed a golden chance of converting deflection on the post. Mariah Williams produced a superb cross as the Indian defense did not mark with Rebecca Gariner deflected into a goal in the 10 th minute to give Australia a 1-0 lead.  The Indian women’s senior returned to action with a closely fought win over World number 1 Netherlands in the first leg of FIH Pro Hockey League 2022 played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on Friday. The Netherlands started the first quarter on an aggressive note as they earned their first penalty corner of the game but was brilliantly saved by Savita Punia. Great Britain got off to an ideal start as Anne Martin scored a brilliant field goal due to a shoddy display by the Indian defense in the 2 nd minute to give them a 1-0 lead. After the pressure by Great Britain, the Indian team got their first genuine chance but was averted by the Great Britain goalkeeper. Indian women’s team qualify directly for the 2021 World Cup

After the points shared between the canceled ODI championship series between India and Pakistan, the Indian women’s team became the fourth team directly to qualify for the prestigious 2021 World Cup to be played in New Zealand from 6 th February to 7 th March. Each team will play other teams once and the top four teams will qualify for the semi-finals. The series between India and Pakistan was supposed to be played between July and November 2019, but due to political tensions between these two countries did not go ahead.
