This Day That Year: Australia beat Pakistan to win the 1999 World Cup

The Australian Cricket Team produced a dominating display as they defeated Pakistan in the finals of 1999 World Cup played at iconic Lords Cricket Ground, Lords on 20 th June. It was a delayed start due to rain in the morning. Pakistan captain Wasim Akram won the toss and decided to bat first. Saeed Anwar played with positive intent putting pressure on Australia bowling while Wajahullah Wasti struggled for timing. Glenn McGrath provided the breakthrough dismissing Wasti for 1. Damien Fleming struck in the next over to get rid of Saeed Anwar to put Pakistan under pressure at 21 for 2. South Africa and Australia were involved in one of the greatest ever ODI match during the 2 nd Semi-finals played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 17 th June 1999. South African captain Hansje Cronje won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start as Shaun Pollock dismissed Mark Waugh in the first over itself. Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist took the attack to South African bowlers playing with positive intent. Allan Donald got the big wicket of dangerous-looking Ricky Ponting for 37. Ponting and Gilchrist added 51 runs for the 2 nd wicket. Jacques Kallis dismissed Gilchrist while Donald got the wicket of Lehman to put Australia under pressure at 68 for 4. The Australian captain Steve Waugh looked in fine touch putting the South African bowlers under pressure while Michael Bevan gave good support. Waugh completed his fifty off 71 balls. Pakistan produced a dominating display as they defeated New Zealand in the first semi-finals of the World Cup 1999 played at Old Trafford, Manchester on 16 th June. New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming won the toss and decided to bat first. Matt Horne and Nathan Astle got off to a cautious start against Pakistani top-quality pace attack. Astle struggled against the Pakistani bowling line up and was dismissed by Shoaib Akthar with a brilliant delivery. New Zealand openers added 20 runs for the opening wicket. Horne played some lovely shots and tried to create pressure. Craig McMillan was facing trouble and struggled to score runs easily. Wasim Akram dismissed McMillan for 3.
