Women’s Asia Cup 2024: Nepal Women Create History

  The Nepal Women’s Team created history as they stunned favorites UAE in the first match of the Asia Cup 2024 played at Rangiriri International Stadium, Dambulla on 19 th July. Nepal captain Indu Barma won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for Nepal as a mix-up resulted in a run out of UAE captain Esha Oza. Sabnim Rai struck with a lovely delivery to dismiss Rinitha Rai. It was a disciplined bowling effort by Nepal bowlers as they kept tight lines and lengths not allowing the UAE batters to score runs easily. Indu Barma struck in her first over dismissing Theertha Satheesh with a simple return catch. At the end of six overs, UAE made 38 for 3. Barma got her 2 nd wicket getting rid of Samaria to leave UAE in deep trouble. Khushi Sharma and Kavisha Egodage steadied the ship taking singles and keeping the strike rotating maintaining the pressure on Nepal bowlers. ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Group A qualifying round: UAE stun Namibia, Netherlands qualifies for Super 12

 The United Arab Emirates provided a spirited display to register their first win in the final Group A qualifying round match played at Kardinia Park, Geelong on Thursday. UAE captain CP Rizwan won the toss and decided to bat first. Vritiya Arvind struggled initially against disciplined Namibia bowling while Muhammed Waseem hit some lovely shots not allowing dot ball pressure to rise. At the end of the first six overs, the UAE openers scored 30 for 0. After the field restrictions, Arvind's struggle ended by providing a simple catch to Lingen. Arvind and Waseem added 39 runs for the opening wicket. CP Rizwan provided the impetus along with Waseem taking singles and boundaries at will. Both batters showed intent not allowing Namibia bowlers to settle keeping the scoreboard ticking. Waseem completed fifty off 40 balls and was soon caught by Truplemann at short third man.  The Asian Champions Sri Lanka made a strong comeback into the tournament with dominating win over UAE played at Kardinia Park, Geelong on Monday. UAE captain CP Rizwan won the toss and decided to field first. Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka showed intent right from word go putting pressure on UAE bowlers. Lankan openers took advantage of big boundaries keeping the scoreboard ticking. Aryan Lakra got rid of Mendis caught in front of the stumps. Mendis and Nissanka added 42 runs for the opening wicket. Dhanajaya de Silva and Nissanka helped Sri Lanka end the first six overs at 52. Both Lankan batters kept the momentum going with singles and not allowing UAE bowlers to settle.  The 2022 Asia Cup qualifying tournament is about to start on 20 th August to be played in Muscat, Oman. Four teams will take part including Hong Kong, Kuwait, Singapore, and United Arab Emirates. The winner of this qualifying tournament would be grouped with Pakistan and India in Group A of the main round starting on 27 th August 2022. Due to Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates reaching the finals Western Region Group also advanced to the Asia Cup qualifying tournament. Singapore and Hong Kong progressed as the top two teams from the Eastern Region Group thus joining Kuwait and UAE in the Asia Cup qualifiers. Each team will play the other team once and the team with the most points will qualify as the third team along with India and Pakistan in Group A of the main round. Ireland name their squad for the World T20 2021

 Ireland announced their squad for the prestigious World T20 2021 to be played in the United Arab Emirates. They would feature in this tournament during qualifying rounds along with Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and Namibia in Group A.  The top two sides in the Group would qualify for the Super 12 stage. The team will be led by Andy Balbirnie and has the experience of youth and top-quality players. Ireland would be looking to shred the disappointment of poor performances in the 2016 World T20 as they were knocked out in the first round itself. Paul Stirling, Kevin O Brien, Gareth Delany, Curtis Campher, Dockrell comprises the batting line-up.  Australia became the 2 nd team after New Zealand to announce its squad for the prestigious World T20 starting from 23 rd October 2021. Many top stars who did not take part in the T20I series against West Indies and Bangladesh away from home has been included. Australia will be led by Aaron Finch will be looking to showcase their prowess. David Warner, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis all makes a comeback into the squad after missing series against West Indies and Bangladesh. Mitchell Marsh in great form seals his place. This Day That Year: South Africa won their maiden ICC trophy.

  Under the captaincy of Aiden Markram, the South African Cricket Team won their maiden ICC title at any level. They defeated Pakistan in the 2014 Under 19 World Cup finals played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on 1 st March. Pakistani captain Sami Aslam won the toss and decided to bat first. It was an outstanding bowling effort by the South African Under 19 side who rattled the Pakistani batting line-up. Imam and Sami Aslam provided a decent start before Rabada dismissed Imam. Corbin Bosch and other South African pace bowlers showed their class and skittled out Pakistan for a paltry total of 131 in 44.3 overs. Bosch took 4 for 15 in 7.3 overs while Justin Dill and Valli grabbed 2 wickets each, Rabada and Sigwli took 1 wicket each. Lasith Malinga entered the ODI arena for Sri Lanka on 17 th July 2004 against the United Arab Emirates at Dambulla during an Asia Cup match. In the first match of his career, Malinga picked 1 for 39 in 10 overs. He took the wicket of UAE captain Khurram Khan for 13. He came into limelight during the 2007 Cricket World Cup Super-8 game against South Africa at Providence Stadium, Guyana. Malinga was given the ball in the 45 th over of the innings and dismissed Shaun Pollock and Andrew Hall. In the next over, he got the wicket of Jacques Kallis and Makhaya Nitini to become the first bowler in international cricket to pick four wickets in four balls. Malinga’s brilliance almost gave Sri Lanka a memorable win but South Africa held their nerves winning the match by 1 wicket with 10 balls to spare. Netherland crushed the hosts United Arab Emirates by 8 wickets in the first play-off match played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Tuesday. United Arab Emirates captain Ahmed Raza won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Rohan Mustafa played a poor stroke dismissed by Klaassen in the very first over. Van Meekeren bowled with good line and length which put the UAE batsmen under pressure dismissed Rameez Shahzad and inform Muhmmad Usman to leave the hosts in tatters at 3 for 3. Glover created more pressure on UAE getting wickets of D Silva and Zawar Farid to make matter worst for the hosts. At the end of 6 overs, UAE were tottering at 14 for 5. It was an interesting day’s of cricket on the 5 th day of ICC Men’s World T20 qualifiers 2019. In Group A Namibia stunned Scotland and Netherlands registered their successive win in the tournament beating Singapore. In another upset in the tournament, Jersey stunned United Arab Emirates to register their 2 nd win. Two Group A matches took place ICC Academy Ground, Dubai while UAE and Jersey played their match at Tolerance Oval, Abu Dhabi.
