This Day That Year: England win their maiden World Cup in an epic match

England and New Zealand were involved in one of the greatest ODI matches ever that was played at Lords, London on 14 th July 2019. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to bat first. Henry Nicholls survived LBW shout as the umpire gave it out, but Nicholls reviewed the decision and had to reverse the decision due to the ball hitting above the stumps. Martin Guptill played with intent putting little pressure on England bowlers. Woakes got the breakthrough dismissing Guptill. This time Guptill decided to review the decision but umpire upheld the decision. Jofra Archer and Woakes did not allow Kiwis batsmen to score runs easily. The Indian Cricket Team dream’s of winning the World Cup were shattered as they lost to New Zealand in two day first semi-finals played at Old Trafford, Manchester on 10 th July 2019. On 9 th July, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for Kiwis as Martin Guptill was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah for 1 run. Henry Nicholls and captain Kane Williamson looked cautious. At the end of 10 overs, New Zealand scored 27 for 1. Henry Nicholls and Williamson never looked comfortable but remained steady taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. Rohit Sharma started off to an aggressive start putting pressure on Bangladeshi bowlers. He was given a reprieve as Tamim Iqbal dropped an easy catch chance. On the other hand, KL Rahul also looked in decent touch. At the end of 10 overs, India raced to 69 for 0. After an unbeaten run, the Indian Cricket Team lost the first match of World Cup 2019 against the hosts England played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 30 th June. England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to bat first. The England openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow started off cautiously against Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. At the end of 10 overs, England scored 47 for 0. Roy and Bairstow took on the Indian spin twin which made life tough for Virat Kohli. It was an amazing display by both England openers who showed his class with their power hitting. Pakistan survived a scare before defeating Afghanistan in a low scoring match played at Headingly, Leeds on 29 th June 2019. Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib won the toss and decided to bat first. The left-arm fast bowler, Trent Boult achieved the feat during the 2019 World Cup game against Australia in a day-night encounter played at Lords, London on 29 th June. Boult troubled Australian openers Warner and Finch with his swing. He provided the breakthrough for New Zealand dismissing Finch with a beauty of a delivery. Kiwis put Aussies under pressure to leave them at 92 for 5. Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja rescued the innings with a 107 runs stand for the sixth wicket.
