Women’s Asia Cup 2022: Indian women thrash Bangladesh to inch close for semi-final spot

 The Indian women’s team fought back as they defeated hosts Bangladesh in a one-sided contest to reach the semi-finals spot played at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet on Saturday. Indian stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana won the toss and decided to bat first. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma played with intent right from the word go putting enough pressure on Bangladeshi bowling. Mandhana kept momentum for the Indian team with 3 boundaries in an over and did not allow the Bangladeshi bowlers to settle. Shafali Verma returned to the squad with massive shots keeping the scoreboard with ease. At the end of the first six overs, the Indian openers scored 59 for 0.  It was a memorable moment for Thailand's Women’s team as they defeat higher ranked Pakistan side in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 tournament played at Sylhet International Ground on Thursday. Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof won the toss and decided to bat first. Muneeba Ali and Sidra Ameen looked in decent touch showing intent before Putthawong got rid of the wicketkeeper Muneeba. Thailand bowlers kept it tight not allowing Sidra and Bismah to score runs easily. At the end of the first six overs, Pakistan women made 33 for 1.  Sri Lanka produced another superb performance as they registered a last over win over defending Champions India played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Tuesday. Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for the Lankan team as Mahesh Theekshana got rid of KL Rahul.  The stage is set as Pakistan and India qualified from Group A while Sri Lanka and Afghanistan made it into the Super 4 stage from tomorrow onwards. Afghanistan progressed into the Super 4 stage after winning both their matches against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Sri Lanka has been seeded as B1 while Afghanistan seeded B2. India has been placed as A1 while Pakistan seeded as A2. It promises to be an exciting Super 4 stage as each team will play another team once before the top two teams progress into the finals.  Sri Lanka became the 2 nd team from Group B to qualify for the Super 4 stage as they defeated Bangladesh in a thrilling encounter played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Thursday. Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to field first. Ashita Fernando made his T20I debut for Lanka and got a breakthrough initially dismissing Sabbir Rahman providing a simple catch to Kusal Mendis.  The much-anticipated Asia Cup 2022 starts with Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan being clubbed in Group A while India, Pakistan and UAE, Singapore, Kuwait, and Hong Kong will feature along with both teams. It promises to be an exciting tournament with India being the most successful team in Asia Cup history with 7 titles.  The much-awaited Asia Cup 2022 schedule has been announced by Asian Cricket Council to be played in the United Arab Emirates from 27 th August till 11 th September 2022. Group A comprises Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh while Group B comprises arch-rivals India, Pakistan, and qualifier. The qualifying tournament will see United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Kuwait fight for one spot. The qualifying tournament will be played from 20 th -26 th August 2022.
