On 18 th July 2017, Sri Lanka recorded their highest-ever run chase in the one-off Test match against Zimbabwe at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Chasing a massive target of 388 runs to win, Sri Lanka ended the 4 th day on 170 for 3 with Kusal Mendis on 60 not out and Mathews on 17 not out. It was not an ideal start for the hosts as they lost both overnight batsmen early to leave them in trouble at 203 for 5. Niroshan Dickwella and Gunaratne steadied the Sri Lankan innings with positive stroke play putting pressure on Zimbabwe bowlers. The wicketkeeper-batsman Dickwella looked in decent touch to reach his fifty off 69 balls. Sri Lanka ended the lunch break in a strong position at 270 for 5. After the lunch break, Zimbabwe took the 2 nd new ball immediately but could not do the damage. Gunaratne looked confident and completed his fifty off 94 balls.
