This Day That Year: Sri Lanka recorded their highest run chase in Test cricket

On 18 th July 2017, Sri Lanka recorded their highest-ever run chase in the one-off Test match against Zimbabwe at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Chasing a massive target of 388 runs to win, Sri Lanka ended the 4 th day on 170 for 3 with Kusal Mendis on 60 not out and Mathews on 17 not out. It was not an ideal start for the hosts as they lost both overnight batsmen early to leave them in trouble at 203 for 5. Niroshan Dickwella and Gunaratne steadied the Sri Lankan innings with positive stroke play putting pressure on Zimbabwe bowlers. The wicketkeeper-batsman Dickwella looked in decent touch to reach his fifty off 69 balls. Sri Lanka ended the lunch break in a strong position at 270 for 5. After the lunch break, Zimbabwe took the 2 nd new ball immediately but could not do the damage. Gunaratne looked confident and completed his fifty off 94 balls. Not known for chasing down big targets, Pakistan chased down their highest successful totals in Test cricket against Sri Lanka played at Pallekele International Stadium, Palleke on 7 th July 2015. Chasing down a stiff target of 377 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for Pakistan as they lost 2 early wickets of Ahmed Shahzad and Azhar Ali. Younis Khan and Shan Masood came together playing with positive intent on the Sri Lankan bowlers. Masood looked in aggressive touch against the spinners to reach his fifty off 93 balls while Younis also completed his half-century off 71 balls. Both batsmen made the batting look easy and kept on rotating the strike making life tough for the Sri Lankan bowlers. The experienced Younis Khan completed his century off 165 balls while Shan reached his 100 off 172 balls. Pakistan ended the 4 th day in a strong position at 230 for 2.
