Malaysia Open 2025 Day 3: Disappointing Outing For Indian Shuttlers
The Indian
shuttlers had a disappointing outing as only one of them made it into the
quarterfinals of the Super 1000 Malaysia Open 2025 played at Axiata Arena, Kuala
Lumpur on 9th January. HS Prannoy, women’s doubles pair of Tressa Jolly
suffered narrow losses while Bansod, mixed doubles pair of Crasto/Kapila, and other
pair lost in a one-sided affair.
Tressa
Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand suffered a heartbreaking loss to Jia Ya Fan and Zhang
of China in three thrilling games. The Indian pair struggled in the initial
phases of the first game trailing by 3-6 before taking 7 points in succession
to put the pressure back on the Chinese pair. At the mid-game interval, the
Indians had an 11-7 lead. After the break, Jolly and Gopichand showed
domination with smashes and drop shots keeping consistent pressure on the
Chinese pair before winning the first game at 21-15.
The second
game began well with Jolly and Gopichand taking a decent lead in the initial
phases. Ji and Zhang showed great fighting spirit keeping the pressure on the
Indian pair with consistent smashes to level the scores at 8-8. At the mid-game
interval, the Indian pair had an 11-9 lead. After the break, the Indian pair
looked in control before Jia and Zhang made a strong comeback equaling the
scores at 14-14. Both pairs fought for each point before the Chinese pair won
the second game by 21-18.
Ji and
Zhang started the deciding game on a positive note with a commanding lead in
the initial phases. Jolly and Gopichand showed great fighting spirit to be on
level terms before committing unforced errors. At the mid-game interval, the
Chinese pair had an 11-9 lead. After the break, the match ebbed and flowed as the
Indian pair saved three match points before Gopichand hit the shuttle out
losing by 19-21 to be knocked out.
HS Prannoy
suffered a thrilling three-game loss to Li Shifeng of China. Li dominated the
first game right from the word go putting enough pressure on Prannoy. It was a brilliant
performance by the Chinese winning the first game by 21-8. Li also showed
another dominating performance in the initial phases of the second game.
Prannoy made a strong fightback to level the scores and then never allowed the
Chinese to make a comeback winning the second game by 21-15.
HS Prannoy
looked out of sorts in the deciding game struggling to cope with smashes and
drops of Li. The Indian looked in deep trouble trailing by 6-13 before making a
superb comeback to take points in succession with lovely down-line smashes
keeping Li under immense pressure. The match ebbed and flowed before Li held
onto his nerves, winning by 23-21.
The mixed
doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Kapila lost to Cheng X and Zhang X in straight
games. The first game saw the Indian pair losing by 13-21. It was a closely
fought affair in the second game as both pairs fought for each point before the
Chinese pair won it by 22-20. S Karunakaran and Variyath lost to higher seeded
pair of Goh SH and SJ Lai. Goh and Lai put on an excellent display in the first
game, winning with a scoreline of 21-10. The Indian pair showed some great fight
in the second game taking the lead at the mid-game interval but, the Malaysian
pair won the second game easily by 21-17.
Malvika
Bansod struggled against higher-ranked Chinese player Han Yue in straight
games. The first game saw Bansod showing some great fight keeping the pressure
on the Chinese before later winning the first game easily at 21-18. The second
game was a one-sided affair as Yue played with aggression, winning by 21-11.
Satwik/Chirag
Shetty registered a commanding straight-game win over the Malaysian pair of Azriyn
and Tan WK. It was a dominating
performance by the Indian pair as they looked in complete control with smashes
and keeping the Malaysian under pressure. At the mid-game interval, the Indian
pair led 11-6. Despite showing some fight, Satwik/Chirag won the first game
easily at 21-15. Satwik/Chirag never looked in trouble during the second game
also putting enough pressure on Azriyn and Tan. During the mid-game break, the Indian pair had a 4-point lead. After the break, it was one-way traffic as they won the
second game with the same scoreline of 21-15 to move into the quarterfinals.
They will face another Malaysian pair of Ong YS and Teo E Y.
