This Day That Year: Two legends announce retirement

  It was a tearful day for International cricket as the two legends announced retirement from cricket on 18 th August. The Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayewardene played his final Test match against Pakistan at SSC, Colombo on 18 th August 2014. He failed in the first innings by scoring just 4 runs. In the 2 nd innings, he scored a valuable 54 helping Sri Lanka set a target of 271 runs. Rangana Hearth 5 wicket haul helped Sri Lanka register a 105 runs win. It was a fitting end to a remarkable career for Mahela Jayewardene. He played a total of 149 Test matches (252 innings) and scored 11814 runs at an amazing average of 49.84. Along with Kumar Sangakkara, the right-handed batsman put on massive partnerships helping the Sri Lankan team register famous wins from tough situations. Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayewardene were at their best as they registered the highest ever partnership for any wicket in Test matches against South Africa played at SSC, Colombo on 29th July 2006. South African stand-in captain Ashwell Prince won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a disappointing batting performance by the visitors as they were bowled out for 169 on the first day. In reply, Sri Lanka lost 2 early wickets of Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga to leave the hosts in trouble at 14 for 2. Sangakkara and Jayewardene played with positive intent putting pressure on the South African bowling line up. Kumar completed his fifty in quick time off 56 balls while Jayewardene took 72 balls to reach his half-century. At the end of day 1, Sri Lanka scored 128 for 2 with both players not out.
