Indian men’s hockey team win Olympic Test event
The Indian men’s and women’s team defeated their opponents
to win the Olympic Test event played at Tokyo on Wednesday.
It was a dominating performance from the Indian men’s hockey
who took revenge from the league stage crushing New Zealand 5-0. Both teams
were cautious at the start of the match India earned a penalty corner in the 7th
minute. Harmanpreet Singh could not convert the shot into a goal but did not
miss on a re-awarded penalty corner with a powerful drag-flick shot to give India
1-0 lead. The Indian continued to attack the New Zealand defense. India ended
the first quarter with a 1-0 lead.
In the 2nd quarter, Shamsher scored a goal from
the penalty corner in the 18th minute to give India a 2-0 lead. India made it 3-0 for India with a brilliant field goal from Nilkanata. Gurshabjit scored the 4th the goal for the Indian team with a brilliant assist from Vivek Sagar. Mandeep
Singh converted penalty corner into a goal to give India a commanding 5-0 lead
at the half-time.
The third quarter saw both teams’ intensity drops down. New
Zealand tried to hit a few shots on the Indian goals. In 37th minute,
the shot went wide off the goal post and in the next minute, Jarmanpreet Singh
saved penalty corner. India went into the third quarter with a 5-0 lead.
In the last quarter, the Indian defense stayed strong and
did not allow the New Zealand attackers to strike. With no goals in the 4th
quarter, India won the match by 5-0 and won the Olympic Test Event.
Apart from losing to New Zealand 1-2 in the league, the
Indian team cruised to a 6-0 win and then outplayed Japan 6-3 in the final league
match.
