Journey of Saurashtra to winning their maiden Ranji Trophy title in 2019/20

Saurashtra emerged as the new Champion of 2019/20 Ranji Trophy as they defeated Bengal on the first innings basis played at SCA Stadium, Rajkot that finished on 13 th March 2019. It was their maiden title in the prestigious tournament after reaching the fourth finals in 8 years. Jaydev Unadkat led side started their campaign on a winning note defeating Himachal Pradesh by 5 wickets at HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala from 9 th December. Himachal Pradesh captain Ankit Kalsi won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a brilliant bowling performance by Saurashtra who bowled out Himachal Pradesh for just 120 runs. Jaydev Unadkat, Chirag Jani and Prekerk Mankad took 3 wickets each. In reply, Saurashtra could not post a big total as they were bowled out for just 141 runs. Dharmendra Singh Jadeja was the top scorer with 47 runs while Snell Patel scored 42. The Indian challenge ended as World Championship PV Sindhu crashed out in the quarterfinals to Nozomi Okuhara the All England Badminton Championships played at Arena, Birmingham on Friday. It was a dominating start by Sindhu who looked in complete control with smashes and drop shots not allowing Okuhara to play her natural game. At the interval, the Indian had a commanding 11-6 lead. After the interval, Sindhu made the life tough for the Japanese with smashes and created pressure to win the first set easily at 21-12. In the second game, Okuhara made a strong comeback into the game playing long rallies and creating panic among Sindhu. The young Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen lost out to Denmark Victor Axselen in two straight games at 17-21, 18-21 in the 2 nd round of the prestigious All England Badminton Championships played at Arena, Birmingham on Thursday.   It was a hard-fought match between Lakshya and the experienced Danish player. Victor engaged Sen in long rallies, but the Indian stayed well enough to stayed which put the opponents under pressure.  The young Indian mixed defence with aggression as he emerged right on a long 50 plus rallies. Axselen held his nerves to stay ahead on a three-point lead on a couple of occasion. Every time, the Danish player looked to dominate, the Indian came back strongly to comeback into the match. It was a great start for PV Sindhu who defeated Zhang Bei Wan of United States of America in two straight sets by 21-14, 21-17 to move into the 2 nd round of the All England Badminton Championships played at Arena, Birmingham on Wednesday. The World Champion started off to an aggressive note taking an early 2-0 lead. Sindhu played with aggression and put the USA player under pressure with smashes. Zhang came back strongly to level the things at 6-6. Both players took alternate points till 9-9. The Indian took 2 points in succession to have a 11-9 lead at the interval. After the interval, Zhang tried her best to come back into the game, but the Indian showed her domination to win the first set easily at 21-14 in just 17 minutes. Clinical West Indies beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets to whitewash series

It was a dominant performance by the West Indies team as they cruised to an easy 7 wicket win over Sri Lanka in the 2 nd and final T20I match played at Palleke International Stadium, Kandy on Friday. West Indies captain Kieron Pollard won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for the visitors as Oshane Thomas got rid off Avishka Fernando in the 3 rd over. Thomas bowled with quick pace and did not allow Sri Lankan openers to settle. Shehan Jayasuriya and Kusal Perera tried to put pressure on West Indies bowlers. At the end of six overs, Sri Lanka were 44 for 1. After the power play overs, Fabien Allen was bought into the attack and dismissed Shehan Jayasuriya and Kusal Perera in the same over. The Indian Women’s Cricket reached their maiden T20 World finals after the first semi-finals against England was abandoned due to rain played at Sydney Cricket Ground, SCG on Thursday. Harmanpreet Kaur led side finished top of Pool A winning all their matches. It is a great achievement for the Indian women’s team as they performed brilliantly in the league stages. India started the group stunning the defending Champions Australia by 17 runs in the opening match played at Sydney Showground Stadium, Sydney on 21 st February. After their win against Australia, they defeated Bangladesh by 18 runs on 24 th at WACA Stadium, Perth. It was a superb performance by India as they held their nerves to beat New Zealand by 3 runs in their 3 rd match played at Junction Oval, Melbourne on 27 th February. It was a dominating performance by West Indies as they defeated hosts Sri Lanka by 25 runs in the first T20I match played at Palleke International Ground, Kandy on Wednesday. West Indies captain Kieron Pollard won the toss and decided to bat first. Lendl Simmons and Brandon King got off to a cautious start before Simmons smashed 20 runs off Isuru Udana over. At the end of six overs, West Indies were 58 for 0. After the power play overs, Simmons and King continued to milk the Sri Lankan bowlers. As things looked dangerous for Sri Lanka, Sandkan struck to get rid of King for 33. West Indies openers added 74 runs. Ahead of the semi-finals clash against England to be played on 5 th March, the 16-year-old Shafali Verma has taken world by storm as she jumps 19 places up to number 1 in the latest ICC T20I batting rankings announced on Thursday. Playing her first international tournament on the big stage, Verma has shown her hitting abilities and created fear among opposition bowlers. In the opening match against Australia played at Sydney Show ground, Sydney 21 st February, Verma was superb with her stroke play and hit a quickfire 29 off 15 balls with 5 fours and 1 six. After the final group B match between South Africa and West Indies was abandoned due to persistent rain at the Sydney Showground Stadium, Sydney on Tuesday, South Africa finished top of Pool B with 7 points from 4 games. The semi-finalists line up for the 2020 ICC Women’s World T20 has been decided to be played on 5 th March. India will face England in the repeat of 2018 World T20 played in West Indies. The Indian women had a great run in Group stage winning all their matches. The defending Champions Australia register a close 4 run win against New Zealand in a virtual quarterfinal played at Junction Oval, Melbourne on Monday. New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and decided to field first. Beth Mooney looked in fine touch playing with positive intent. Jensen got the breakthrough dismissing Healy for just 9. The Indian men’s team achieved their highest ever rankings of number 4 after impressive performances in debut Pro League season since its inception since 2003. It comes at the expense of 2016 Rio Olympics champions Argentina. Manpreet Singh led side had a great outing in first three rounds defeating Netherlands twice, Belgium and Australia once. In the matches they lost, Indian team gave a good fight and created pressure on the opponent teams with aggressive play. India started their Pro League campaign with 6-2 win over Netherlands in the first match played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on 18 th .
