This Day That Year: Two legends announce retirement

 

It was a tearful day for International cricket as the two legends announced retirement from cricket on 18th August.

The Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayewardene played his final Test match against Pakistan at SSC, Colombo on 18th August 2014. He failed in the first innings by scoring just 4 runs. In the 2nd innings, he scored a valuable 54 helping Sri Lanka set a target of 271 runs. Rangana Hearth 5 wicket haul helped Sri Lanka register a 105 runs win.

It was a fitting end to a remarkable career for Mahela Jayewardene. He played a total of 149 Test matches (252 innings) and scored 11814 runs at an amazing average of 49.84. Along with Kumar Sangakkara, the right-handed batsman put on massive partnerships helping the Sri Lankan team register famous wins from tough situations.

He hit 34 centuries and 50 half-centuries to his name with a career-best score of 374 against South Africa. Jayewardene also captained the side and was a great slip catcher. He made his Test debut for Sri Lanka on 2nd August 1996 against India at Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Apart from Sangakkara, Jayewardene is 2nd Sri Lankan with leading-run getter in Test matches.

Jayewardene was a great servant for Sri Lanka and World cricket. Both legends showed their class against top quality bowling to register memorable wins in tough conditions.

Known to be a great wristy player, VVS Laxman announced retirement from international cricket on 18th August 2012. He led India to many famous wins in India and abroad.

Laxman was a part of the Test team that had Sehwag, Ganguly, Dravid, Tendulkar, Dhoni, and others. He played 134 matches (225 innings) and 8781 runs with an amazing average of 45.97. His career-best score was 281 against Australia in the famous Test match at Kolkata.

His last Test match was against Australia on 24th January 2012. He really showed his class with his shot-making and helped India win matches overseas. During his Test career, he hit 17 centuries and 56 half-centuries.

 Apart from this record, Laxman played a total of 86 ODI matches (83 innings) and scored 2338 runs with a career-best score of 131. He smashed 6 centuries and 10 half-centuries in ODI cricket.
