ICC Women’s World T20 2020: India beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets to top Pool A

The Indian women’s team produced another dominating performance in their last league game against Sri Lanka played at Junction Oval, Melbourne on Saturday. Sri Lanka captain Chamari Atthapatu won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for the Lankans as Deepti Sharma dismissed Thimashini for 2 runs. Chamari looked impressive with her stroke play and put some pressure on the Indian bowlers. At the end of six overs, Sri Lankan women were 35 for 1. After the power play overs, Rajeshwari Gayakwad dismissed Madavi. The Indian spinners were superb with their line and lengths which did not allow Sri Lanka to score runs easily. The Indian women’s team held their nerves to register a 4 runs win over New Zealand in their Group A match played at Junction Oval, Melbourne on Thursday. New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and decided to field first. Smriti Mandhana who missed the last match played some lovely strokes before being bowled by Tahuhu. Taniya Bhatia who was promoted to number 3 looked in decent touch. Shafali Verma continued her superb form with attacking stroke play and made life tough for White Ferns bowlers. At the end of six overs, India 49 for 1. After the power play overs, Verma was dropped by Maddy Green. Mair struck for White Ferns as she dismissed Bhatia. A rampant Australia showed their class as they defeated hosts South Africa by 97 runs in the third and deciding T20I match played at Newlands, Cape Town on Wednesday. South African captain Quinton de Kock won the toss and decided to field first. David Warner and Aaron Finch started off to a cautious start in first two overs. Finch and Warner took 17 runs from Rabada over and then 18 runs off Nortje over which put South African bowlers under pressure. The experienced duo was simply rampant with aggressive stroke play and good running between the wicket. At the end of six overs, Australia raced towards 75 for 0. The Indian women’s team registered their second successive win of the tournament defeating Bangladesh by 18 runs played at WACA Stadium, Perth on Monday. Bangladeshi captain Salma Khatun won the toss and decided to field first. Taniya Bhatia who came to open the innings replacing Smriti Mandhana looked edgy but Shafali Verma was in sensational form with big sixes in the first two overs which put pressure on Bangladesh bowlers. It was an amazing game of hockey as India went down fighting to Australia in the first leg of Pro Hockey League match played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on Friday. The Indian started off an aggressive start with attacking moves which put pressure on Australian defence. It was a mixed day for Indian shuttlers as Saina Nehwal and Sameer Verma moved into the quarterfinals of the Super 300 Spain Masters played at Barcelona on Thursday. In all India second round match, Kidambi Srikanth lost to Ajay Jayaram in two straight sets by 6-21, 17-21 to be knocked out. In the first match of the day, Sai Praneeth lost to Anthony Gingting 6-21 before retiring hurt at the start for 2 nd game to give Indonesia a 1-0 lead. Praneeth looked out of sorts against Ginting.
