Bangladesh Under 19 beat New Zealand by 6 wickets to reach their maiden finals
The Bangladesh Under 19 created history by reaching their
maiden finals beating New Zealand by six wickets in the 2nd Super
League semi-finals played at JB Marks Oval, Potchefstroom on Thursday.
Bangladeshi captain Akbar Ali won the toss and decided to
field on an overcast morning which assisted the bowlers. Shoriful Islam was
brilliant with new ball with 2 consecutive maiden overs. Shamim Hossain got the
breakthrough dismissing Rhys Mariu. Ollie White and Lellman struggled against
the Bangladeshi bowlers. At the end of 10 overs, New Zealand were 26 for 1.
After the power play overs, Ollie White tried to put
pressure on the Bangladeshi bowlers. Rakibul Hasan dismissed White with a good
catch by Akbar Ali. The Bangladeshi bowlers kept a tight lid not allowing Lellman
and Lidstone to score runs easily. When Lellman tried to increase the scoring
rate, a superb catch by Mahmudul Hasan Joy ended the innings of Lellman for 24.
Hasan Murad got rid of Jesse Tashkoff to leave New Zealand in trouble at 74 for
4. Wheeler Greenall looked in good touch with his stroke play coming down the track
and putting pressure on Bangladesh bowlers. Lidstone and Greenall made sure
that they rotated the strike. As things were looking bright for New Zealand,
Shoriful Islam dismissed Nicholas Lidstone with a brilliant yorker. Lidstone
and Greenall added 67 runs for the 5th wicket.
Hasan Murad got the wicket of Quinn Sunde to leave New
Zealand at 142 for 6. Greenall took the responsibility with big hits at the end
and reached his fifty off 64 balls with a boundary. Joey Field hit a quick fire
12 off 11 balls. In the last over, Greenall hit vital blows and helped New
Zealand post 211 for 8 in 50 overs.
In reply to 212 runs to win, Parvez Hossain Emon was looking
good with his stroke play. Kristian Clarke got the breakthrough dismissing Emon
for 14. Bangladeshi openers added 23 runs. Soon after, Tanzid Hasan was
dismissed by Hancock cheaply to give New Zealand some hope of winning the
match. Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Towhid Hridoy steadied the innings taking singles
and hitting occasional boundaries. At the end of 10 overs, Bangladesh were 42
for 2.
After the power play overs, both batsmen made the batting
look easy with boundaries and kept the scoreboard ticking. Adithya Ashok got
the big wicket of Towhid Hridoy for well made 40 off 47 balls. Hridoy and Mahmudul
added 68 runs for the 3rd wicket. Mahmudul Hasan made the batting
look easy and reached his fifty off 77 balls and kept the scoreboard ticking
along with Shahadat Hossain. Hasan Joy looked composed with his strokes and
never allowed New Zealand bowlers to settle. He finally reached his century off
126 balls and was dismissed the next ball. Hasan Joy and Shahadat added 101
runs for the 4th wicket. The captain Akbar Ali hit winning runs and
helped Bangladesh win the match by six wickets with 35 balls to spare. For New
Zealand, Hancock, Ashok, Tashkoff and Clarke took 1 wicket each.
Bangladesh Under 19 215 for 4 in 44.1 overs (Mahmudul Hasan
Joy 100, Shahadat Hossain 40*, Kristian Clarke 1/37) beat New Zealand Under 19
211 for 8 in 50 overs ( Wheeler Greenall 75*, Lidstone 44, Shoriful Islam 3/45,
Hasan Murad 2/34) by six wickets.
For his brilliant century, Mahmudul Hasan Joy was awarded
the player of the match. The finals will be played on 9th February at
the same ground.
