This Day That Year: England all-rounder plays one of the best Test innings
It was amazing scenes as Ben Stokes played one of the best
Test innings leading England to their highest successful run chases during 3rd
Ashes match played at Headingly, Leeds on 25th August 2019.
Chasing a massive target of 359 runs to win, Stokes played
with caution and remained not out on 2. England captain Joe Root was dismissed
early on day 4. Bairstow and Stokes took the attack to Australian bowlers with
positive stroke play. Both batsmen played accordingly as they ended the first
session at 238 for 4.
After the lunch break, England lost an early wicket of Jonny
Bairstow. On the other hand, Ben Stokes remained solid reaching his fifty off
152 balls to keep England's hopes alive. Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, and Stuart Broad all went in quick succession to put enough pressure on the hosts.
With 76 runs required to win, Ben Stokes faced most of the
balls and hit some innovative strokes off Nathan Lyon and the pace bowlers.
Stokes completed his century off 199 balls. After hitting 100, Stokes put the
pressure on the Australian bowlers with power-hitting. On the other hand, Jack
Leach had to face two to three balls in an over.
Tim Paine looked clueless and took a review against Jack
Leach that was legside. Stokes remained calm under pressure. The match went
right down the wire as Stokes hit a six off Nathan Lyon bowling. With 2 runs
needed, Lyon missed a simple run-chance and then next ball was given not out
for an LBW, but due to no reviews, Stokes survived.
Jack Leach tapped the ball to the leg side taking a single. Stokes
hit the winning runs to help England a register remarkable 1 wicket win. Leach
remained solid as he made 1 off 17 balls. Stokes and Leach added 76 for the final
wicket. Stokes played one of the best 4th
innings knock by remaining not out on 135 off 219 balls with 11 fours and 8
sixes at an amazing strike rate of 61.64.
It was a sensational win for the England Cricket Team. After
being bowled out for 67 runs in the first innings, Ben Stokes's performance with
ball and bat led the hosts to a famous win. It was England highest run chase in
Test matches. After the heroic win, the Ashes was leveled at 1-1.
For his all-round performance, Stokes was named the man of
the match award. The Ashes was a part of the newly ICC Test Championship.

Cummins 3/23) and 362 for 9 in 125.4 overs ( Stokes 135*, Root 77, Hazlewood
4/80) beat Australia 179 in 52.1 overs ( Labuschagne 74, Warner 61, Jofra
Archer 6/45) and 246 in 75.2 overs ( Labuschagne 80, Wade 33, Stokes 3/56) by 1
wicket.
