BWF World Tour finals 2021 : PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth went down fighting in their opening matches

 

It was a disappointing day for Indian shuttlers as PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth lost their opening matches of the BWF World Tour finals played at Bangkok, Thailand on Wednesday.

Women’s Singles

PV Sindhu went down fighting to world number 1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in Group B match. It was a good start by both players who took alternate points. Tai played with aggression and put Sindhu under pressure with her smashes and drop shots. At the mid-game interval, the world number 1 led 11-8. After the break, Sindhu made unforced errors as Tai took a 14-10 lead.

Sindhu came back strongly into the game with powerful smashes putting Tai under pressure. From trailing, the Indian leveled the scores at 16-16. Both players showed their class taking alternate points till 19-19. Sindhu returned in grand style to win the first game at 21-19.

The second game was a great start by Tai Tzu Ying who put Sindhu under pressure with smashes and drop shots taking an early 6-0 lead. Tai continued her aggressive approach making life tough for the Indians. At the mid-game interval, the world number 1 Tai had a commanding 11-4 lead. After the interval, it was a commanding display by the Chinese Taipei player who kept on putting pressure on Sindhu and won the second game easily at 21-12 to force the match into the decider.

Tai Tzu Ying began the third game off to a great start taking an early 6-3 lead. Sindhu proved her worth back to level the scores at 6-6. The match went from one side to another before Tai took an 11-9 lead at the interval as Sindhu made an error on the backline. After the interval, the Indian kept 2 points with a 13-15 lead in favor of Tai. Tai played with aggression as Sindhu made mistakes to win the third game at 21-17. She will play her second game of the tournament.

Kidambi Srikanth went down fighting

India’s lone male representative Kidambi Srikanth went down fighting to world number 2 Anders Antonsen of Denmark in a Group B match. Srikanth started off brilliantly in the opening game with attacking badminton taking an early lead. There was a long 35 rally shots before Srikanth caught the Danish player off guard and took an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, it was a close-fought affair as Anotsen equaled the score at 12-12. Srikanth showed his class and put the Danish player under pressure to win the first game easily at 21-15.

In the second game, Anotsen showed his class by taking a 5-2 lead after being 0-2 down. It was a superb badminton display by both players as Danish player took 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, Srikanth showed great badminton skills to reduce the gap at 15-16. The Indian made a mistake at the net. Anotsen took points in succession winning the second game at 21-16 to force the match into the decider.

In the deciding game, it was a closely fought game as both players took alternate points till 9-9. Srikanth took an 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, the Indian missed two chances of converted points but hit into the net. Anotsen made a strong comeback to level the scores at 13-13.

The match was a close-fought affair as Srikanth committed mistakes hitting the net. Antonsen held his nerves to win the decider at 21-18.
