Ashes 2023 England vs Australia Test 1 Day 1: Enthralling day of cricket
The first day
of the first Test match between England and Australia saw some brilliant
cricket played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 16 June 2023.
England
captain Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bat first. There was one change
from Australia as Josh Hazlewood replaced Mitchell Starc in the playing XI. Zak
Crawley looked in brilliant form right from the word go and put pressure on Australian
bowlers. Josh got the early breakthrough dismissing Ben Duckett with a simple
catch to Alex Carey.
Ollie Pope
came to the crease and looked positive from word go maintain pressure. Zak
Crawley got a reprieve as Australian wicketkeeper did not appeal for a catch. Nathan
Lyon dismissed Ollie Pope with review for LBW. The umpire called it not out but
on review it was overturned to out. Pope and Crawley added 70 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Crawley looked solid completing half-century off 56 deliveries. Scott
Boland produced a beauty to dismiss Zak Crawley. England ended the first
session at 124 for 3.
Joe Root
came to the crease and showed positive intent hitting reverse sweep six off Scott
Boland. Harry Brook also looked in good touch keeping the scoreboard ticking
along with Root. Brook was dismissed in a bizarre manner as it hit the pad onto
stumps. Brook and Root added 51 runs for the 4th wicket. Soon after,
England captain Ben Stokes perished cheaply to leave the hosts in trouble.
Jonny
Bairstow came to the crease and looked in sublime touch along with Root. Both
England batters did not allow Australian bowlers to settle keeping scoreboard
ticking. Root completed half-century off 74 deliveries. Root was given out by
the umpire but on review it was overturned too not out. England went into the tea
break at 240 for 5.
Bairstow
came with aggressive intent after the tea break completing half-century off 58
deliveries. Bairstow and Root kept the pressure on Australian bowlers hitting
boundaries at will. Alex Carey missed a catch chance to get rid of Bairstow. Nathan
Lyon eventually got rid of Bairstow trying to hit a big shot stumped by Carey.
Bairstow and Root added 121 runs for the 6th wicket.
Moeen Ali
also showed intent with some big shots and kept the scoreboard ticking. Lyon
grabbed his fourth wicket dismissing Ali stumped. Broad joined the party with valuable
runs before being bowled by Green. Joe Root just took some brilliant shots,
reaching his 30th Test century off 145 deliveries. Root and Ollie
Robinson added an unbeaten 43 runs for the 9th wicket. England declared
their innings on 393 for 8.
In reply,
David Warner and Usman Khawaja kept at bay as Australia ended on 14 for 0 in 4
overs.
Australia

Crawley 61, Nathan Lyon 4/112) by 379 runs.
