This Day That Year: Australia beat Pakistan to win the 1999 World Cup
The Australian Cricket Team produced a dominating display as
they defeated Pakistan in the finals of 1999 World Cup played at iconic Lords
Cricket Ground, Lords on 20th June.
It was a delayed start due to rain in the morning. Pakistan
captain Wasim Akram won the toss and decided to bat first. Saeed Anwar played
with positive intent putting pressure on Australia bowling while Wajahullah
Wasti struggled for timing. Glenn McGrath provided the breakthrough dismissing
Wasti for 1. Damien Fleming struck in the next over to get rid of Saeed Anwar
to put Pakistan under pressure at 21 for 2.
Ijaz Ahmed and Abdul Razzaq provided some resistance against
the top-quality bowling of Australia. Tom Moody broke the partnership
dismissing Razzaq for 17. Razzaq and Ijaz added 47 runs for the 3rd wicket.
In the next over, Shane Warne got Ijaz Ahmed to put Pakistan under severe
pressure at 77 for 4. The Australian bowlers did not allow the Pakistani
batsmen to score runs easily and bowled them out for a paltry total of 132 in
39 overs. Ijaz Ahmed was the top scorer for Pakistan with 22.
Chasing 133 runs to win, Adam Gilchrist was in serious
hitting mood taking the attack to Pakistani bowling line up. On the other hand,
Mark Waugh also played with positive intent making. The explosive left-handed
batsman Gilchrist reached his fifty off 33 balls. Saqlain Mushtaq finally got
the wicket dismissing Gilchrist for 54. Gilchrist and Waugh added 75 in just
10.1 overs. Ricky Ponting and Mark Waugh kept the scoreboard ticking making
sure that Australia is on course for a resounding win.
Waugh and Ponting added 37 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Darren Lehmann hit the winning runs to help Australia win the match by
8 wickets with 179 balls to spare.
For his match-winning spell of 4 for 33 in 9 overs, Shane
Warne was named the man of the match.
Australia 133 for 2 in 20.1 overs (Gilchrist 54, Waugh 37*,
Wasim Akram 1/41, Saqlain Mushtaq 1/21) beat Pakistan 132 in 39 overs (Ijaz
Ahmed 22, Shane Warne 4/33) by 8 wickets.
