This Day That Year: South Africa- Australia involved in one of the greatest ODI matches
South Africa and Australia were involved in one of the
greatest ever ODI match during the 2nd Semi-finals played at
Edgbaston, Birmingham on 17th June 1999.
South African captain Hansje Cronje won the toss and decided
to field first. It was an ideal start as Shaun Pollock dismissed Mark Waugh in
the first over itself. Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist took the attack to
South African bowlers playing with positive intent. Allan Donald got the big
wicket of dangerous-looking Ricky Ponting for 37. Ponting and Gilchrist added
51 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Jacques Kallis dismissed Gilchrist while Donald got the
wicket of Lehman to put Australia under pressure at 68 for 4. The Australian
captain Steve Waugh looked in fine touch putting the South African bowlers
under pressure while Michael Bevan gave good support. Waugh completed his fifty
off 71 balls. Shaun Pollock got the important breakthrough dismissing Waugh for
56. Waugh and Bevan added 90 runs for the 5th wicket. Pollock got
rid of Tom Moody in the same over to reduce Australia at 158 for 6.
Bevan took the responsibility playing according to the
situation and completed fifty off 90 balls. Warne gave Bevan good support
adding 49 runs for the 7th wicket. After the fall of Warne wicket,
Donald got wickets of Paul Reiffel and Damien Fleming. Donald got rid of Bevan
to bowl out Australia for 213 in 49.2 overs.
Chasing 214 runs to win, Herschelle Gibbs looked in fluent
touch with positive stroke play while Gary Kirsten remained solid. Shane Warne
produced a superb delivery to dismiss Gibbs for 30. The South African openers
added 48 runs in 12.2 overs. The Australian made a strong comeback into the
match reducing South Africa to 61 for 4. Jonty Rhodes and Jacques Kallis put
the pressure back on the Australian bowling line up taking singles and hitting
occasional boundaries. Paul Reiffel got the breakthrough for Australia
dismissing Rhodes for 43. Rhodes and Kallis added 84 runs for the 5th
wicket.
Shaun Pollock came to the crease and took a few balls to
settle before taking on the Australian bowlers with attacking strokes. On the other
hand, Kallis looked composed to reach his half-century off 90 balls. Warne struck
to get rid of Kallis for 53. Kallis and Pollock added 30 runs for the 6th
wicket. The match was headed for a great finish as Lance Klusener produced
brilliant shots.
With 9 runs needed off the final over, Klusener hit 2
successive boundaries off the first two balls. A miscommunication resulted in
Allan Donald run out as the match ended in a thrilling tie. Klusener remained
not out on 31 off 16 balls but it was heartbreak for South Africa as they were
knocked out of the tournament.
For his magical spell of 4 for 29 in 10 overs, Shane Warne
was awarded the man of the match.
Australia qualified for the finals of the tournament due to
finishing higher in the Super 6 stage.
Australia 213 in 49.2 overs ( Bevan 65, Waugh 56, Shaun
Pollock 5/36, Donald 4/32) beat South Africa 213 in 49.4 overs ( Kallis 53,
Rhodes 43, Klusener 31*, Warne 4/29) due to finishing higher in the Super 6
stage.
