This Day in 2019: Mumbai Indians won their fourth IPL title
Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings in the finals played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad played
on 12th May to win their fourth IPL title.
After being invited into bat by CSK captain MS Dhoni, Mumbai
Indians openers Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock got the team off to a flying
start putting 45 runs in just 4.5 overs. De Kock looked in fine touch scoring
29 off 17 balls with 4 sixes. Both openers fell at the score of 45.
Surya Kumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya could not
contribute much as Chennai Super Kings bowlers kept picking wickets at regular
intervals. Thanks to lusty blows by Kieron Pollard, Mumbai Indians posted 149
for 7.
Krunal Pandya got the
breakthrough dismissing du Plessis after a flying start by CSK openers. Mumbai Indian bowlers kept a tight lid as they took wickets of Suresh
Raina, Ambati Rayudu, and MS Dhoni. Watson made the look easy with great hitting.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled a sensational 19th over
giving away 9 runs and took the wicket of Dwayne Bravo. After being smashed for 43 runs in the first 3 overs, Rohit Sharma gave the over to Malinga. Krunal Pandya's brilliant throw from the
boundary ended Watson's innings. With 2 runs needed, Lasith
Malinga bowled a great slower ball to dismiss Shardul Thakur. Mumbai Indians won the match by 1 run to win the fourth title which is the most by any team in IPL history.
It was a team performance by Mumbai Indians finishing
top of the points table with 18 points which includes 9 wins and 5 losses in
the league stage.
Quinton de Kock was the leading runs scorer for Mumbai
Indians in 2019 edition. He made 529 runs from 16 matches ( 16 innings) with 4
half-centuries. His best score was 81. The South African wicketkeeper finished
as the 3rd leading run-getter in the tournament.
Among the leading wicket-takers for Mumbai Indians, Jasprit
Bumrah took 19 wickets from 16 matches ( 16 innings) with an economy of 6.63
runs per over. He finished as the 5th leading wicket-taker in the
tournament.
Previous IPL titles
Mumbai Indians won
their maiden IPL title in 2013 defeating Chennai Super Kings by 23 runs played
at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 26th May 2013. In this edition, Mumbai
Indians finished 2nd in the points table.
After losing the first 4 matches in the 2015 edition, Mumbai
Indians finished 2nd in the points table and eventually won the
title defeating Chennai Super Kings by 41 runs played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata
on 24th May.
Mumbai Indians won their third IPL title defeating Rising
Pune Supergiant by just 1 run played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium,
Hyderabad on 21st May 2017.
