This Day That Year: Bangladesh stun Pakistan in World Cup 1999


For the first time in the World Cup and ODI history, Bangladesh defeated Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup game played at Northamptonshire.
Pakistan captain Wasim Akram won the toss and decided to field first. The decision did not pay off as Shahriar Hossain played with positive intent while Mehrab Hossain struggled against Pakistan top quality bowling. Saqlain Mushtaq got the breakthrough dismissing Hossain for 9 off 42 balls. Saqlain struck again to get rid of Shahriar Hossain.

After the fall of 2 quick wickets, Aminul Islam and Akram Khan put on 50 runs for the 3rd wicket. Shahid Afridi got the breakthrough dismissing Islam for 15. Pakistan came back strongly to reduce Bangladesh at 148 for 5. Minhajul Abedin and Khaled Mahmud put on 39 runs for the 6th wicket. Pakistan kept on picking wickets at regular intervals to restrict Bangladesh at 223 for 9 in 50 overs. Akram Khan was the top scorer for Bangladesh with 42, Khaled Mahmud made 27. For Pakistan, Saqlain Mushtaq wreaked havoc to take 5 for 35 in 10 overs.

Chasing the modest total of 224 runs to win, Pakistan was in tatters as they lost 5 wickets at the score of 42. Azhar Mahmood and Pakistan captain Wasim Akram steadied the innings for Pakistan with an important added 55 runs for the 6th wicket. Azhar was run out by Khaled Mahmud which put Pakistan under immense pressure.

Waqar Younis and Saqlain Mushtaq kept the Pakistani hopes alive with 36 runs stand for the 9th wicket. Mohammad Rafique got the wicket of Waqar Younis to help Bangladesh closer to a historic win. A superb run out by Khaled Mahmud to run-out Saqlain Mushtaq gave the debutants in World Cup 1999 a brilliant 62 runs win.

For his all-round contribution, Khaled Mahmud was awarded the man of the match.
Bangladesh 223 for 9 in 50 overs ( Akram Khan 42, Shahriar Hossain 39, Saqlain Mushtaq 5/35) beat Pakistan 161 in 44.3 overs ( Wasim Akram 29, Azhar Mahmood 29, Khaled Mahmud 3/31) by 62 runs.
