This Day That Year: Australia beat West Indies in a close encounter
After thrashing Afghanistan in the opening match, Australia
defeated West Indies in the 2019 World encounter played at Trent Bridge,
Nottingham on 6th June last year.
West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start as Oshane Thomas got the breakthrough getting
rid of Aaron Finch. Sheldon Cottrell 2 wickets of Warner and Glenn Maxwell
while Andre Russell dismissing Usman Khawaja left Australia in tatters at 38
for 4. At the end of 10 overs, Australia was struggling at 48 for 4.
After the power play overs, Smith and Stoinis steadied the
innings for Australia. The West Indies captain Jason Holder ended the 41 runs
stand as he dismissed Stoinis which put Australia under pressure at 79 for 5. Steve
Smith looked in fluent touch with positive stroke play. Alex Carey showed his
positive intent taking on the West Indies bowlers. Andre Russell produced
another important breakthrough getting the wicket of Carey for 45. Carey and Smith added 68 runs for the 6th
wicket.
Steve Smith looked in decent touch and reached his fifty off
77 balls. Nathan Coulter Nile played with positive intent right from the word
go to put the West Indies bowlers under pressure. Coulter Nile completed his
fifty off just 41 balls which helped Australia recover from a tough situation.
Oshane Thomas made the breakthrough for West Indies get rid of Steve Smith for
73 with a superb catch by Sheldon Cottrell at the boundary. Smith and Coulter Nile
added 102 runs for the 7th wicket. Coulter Nile continued his
aggressive approach while Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc went cheaply. Carlos
Braithwaite took the wickets of Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter Nile, and Mitchell
Starc to bowl out Australia for 288 in 49 overs.
Chasing 289 runs to win, West Indies lost an early wicket of
Evin Lewis dismissed by Pat Cummins. Chris Gayle survived few anxious moments
against Mitchell Starc but played some lovely shots. Starc produced a beauty of
a delivery that dismissed dangerous Gayle for 21. Nicolas Pooran and Shai Hope
steadied the West Indies innings taking them to 54 for 2 at the end of 10
overs.
Both batsmen looked in aggressive touch before Adam Zampa
got the breakthrough dismissing the left-handed Pooran with a one-handed catch
by Aaron Finch. Hope and Pooran added 68
runs for the 3rd wicket.
Shimron Hetymer came to the crease and put the Australian
bowlers under pressure. On the other hand, Hope looked solid completing his
fifty off 76 balls. A miscommunication led to Shimron Hetymer run out. Hope and
Hetymer added 50 runs for the 4th wicket. Pat Cummins got the well-set
Shai Hope which dented West Indies hopes of winning. Hope and Holder added 41
runs for the 5th wicket.
Andre Russell, Carlos Braithwaite added some vital runs with
Jason Holder, but Starc dismissed Russell and Braithwaite to end West Indies
hope. West Indies captain Holder completed his fifty off 50 balls. Mitchell
Starc got rid of Holder which made life tough for the Caribbean. Ashley Nurse
enjoyed time in the middle remaining not out on 19 off 16 balls but was not
enough for West Indies to win the match. Australia won the match by 15 runs.
For his 92 off 60 balls, Nathan Coulter Nile was awarded the
man of the match.
Australia 288 in 49 overs ( Nathan Coulter Nile 92, Steve
Smith 73, Carlos Braithwaite 3/67, Andre Russell 2/41) beat West Indies 273 for
9 in 50 overs ( Shai Hope 68, Jason Holder 51, Mitchell Starc 5/46, Pat Cummins
2/41) by 15 runs.
