This Day That Year: Bangladesh stun West Indies in 2019 WC game
The Bangladesh Cricket Team successfully chased down a massive
target to beat West Indies in World Cup game played at County Ground, Taunton
on 17th June last year.
Bangladeshi captain Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and
decided to field first. It was an ideal start as Mohammad Saifuddin got the
wicket of Chris Gayle for 0. Shai Hope and Evin Lewis looked cautious with
their approach. At the end of 10 overs, West Indies scored 32 for 1.
Lewis and Hope showed their intent against the Bangladeshi
bowlers. The explosive left-handed batsman Lewis reached his fifty off 58 balls
while Hope looked solid as ever. Hope also completed his fifty off 75 balls. Shakib
Al Hasan provided the breakthrough for Bangladesh ending 116 runs stand for the
2nd wicket between Lewis and Hope.
Nicolas Pooran came to the crease and hit some lovely shots.
Shakib struck again to get rid of Pooran to put West Indies under some
pressure. Shimron Hetymer created enough pressure on the Bangladeshi bowlers
with big-hitting. On the other hand, Hope continued his merry way. Hetymer
completed his fifty off just 25 balls and was dismissed the next ball. Hetymer
and Hope added 83 runs for the 4th wicket. Mustafizur Rahman got rid
of Andre Russell in the same over.
West Indies captain Jason Holder came to the crease and put
the Bangladeshi bowlers under pressure. Holder was dismissed for a quickfire 33
off 15 balls to add 39 runs for the 6th wicket along with Hope.
Shai Hope was finally dismissed for a well-made 96. The
Bangladeshi bowlers made a strong comeback as they restricted Bangladesh to 321
for 8 in 50 overs.
Chasing 322 runs to win, Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal got
Bangladesh off to a flying start putting the pressure on West Indies bowlers.
Sarkar looked positive with his intent and made the bowling week. Andre Russell
got the breakthrough for West Indies dismissing Sarkar for 29 off 23 balls.
Sarkar and Tamim added 52 runs in 8.2 overs. At the end of 10 overs, Bangladesh
scored 70 for 1.
Shakib AL Hasan was in superb touch playing with positive
intent and putting pressure on the West Indies bowlers. On the other hand,
Tamim looked solid as ever. The all-rounder Shakib raced to his fifty off 40
balls. A brilliant one-handed pick-up throw by Sheldon Cottrell in his follow-through ended Tamim Iqbal's innings. Tamim and Shakib added 69 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Oshane Thomas got the wicket of Rahim for 1 to bring back West Indies
into the game.
Liton Das came to the crease and smashed the West Indies
bowlers. On the other hand, Shakib made the batting look easy to complete his
century off 83 balls. Das showed his class against West Indies pacers and
completed his half-century off 43 balls. It was an amazing batting display by
both Bangladesh batsmen as they put on unbeaten 189 runs for the 4th
wicket.
Shakib AL Hasan remained not out on 124 while Das on 94 off
69 balls. Bangladesh won the match by 7 wickets with 51 balls to spare. This
was the 2nd successful run chase in World Cup history.
For his all-round performance, Shakib AL Hasan was named the
man of the match.
Bangladesh 322 for 3 in 41.3 overs ( Shakib AL Hasan 124*, Liton
Das 94*, Andre Russell 1/42, Oshane Thomas 1/52) beat West Indies 321 for 8 in
50 overs ( Shai Hope 96, Evin Lewis 70, Hetymer 50, Shakib AL Hasan 2/54,
Rahman 3/59) by 7 wickets.
