This Day That Year: England played their first T20I match
The first T20I match was played between Australia and New
Zealand on 17th February 2005. 4 months later England featured in
their first match against England played at Rose Bowl, Southampton on 13th
June 2005.
In that match, England captain Michael Vaughan won the toss
and decided to bat first. Geriant Jones and Marcus Tresthoick played with
positive intent putting pressure on the Australian bowlers. Glenn McGrath got
the breakthrough for Australia dismissing Jones. England openers added 28 runs
in 3.5 overs. Andrew Flintoff was dismissed cheaply by Kasprowicz for 6. At the
end of 6 overs, England scored 50 for 2.
After the power play overs, Kevin Pietersen and Trescothick took
the attack to Australian bowlers with attacking stroke play. Both batsmen kept
the scoreboard ticking making life tough for the visitors. Clarke got the
much-needed breakthrough dismissing dangerous Pietersen with a quickfire 34 off
18 balls. Pietersen and Trescothick added 51 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Soon after England captain, Vaughan and Tresthoick fell in quick
succession. After the loss of 3 quick wickets, Paul Collingwood played with positive
intent while Andrew Strauss gave him good support. Collingwood and Strauss
added 49 runs for the 6th wicket. Collingwood was dismissed off the
last ball for 46 off 26 balls. England posted a competitive total of 179 for 8
in 20 overs.
Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden gave a flying start to the
Australian side putting on 23 runs in 2.4 overs. Darren Gough struck twice dismissing
both openers. Jon Lewis and Darren Gough broke the backbone of the Australian batting
line up by reducing them to 31 for 7. Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee provided
some resistance adding 36 runs for the 8th wicket. Collingwood broke
the partnership dismissing Gillespie and then dismissed Lee. Steve Harmison finished
the job as he dismissed Glenn McGrath to bowl out Australia for 79 in 14.3
overs. For England, Jon Lewis took 4 for 24, Darren Gough 3 for 16.
England has played a total of 117 T20I matches so far
winning 58, lost 53, 2 tied, and 4 no-result with a win percentage of 52.21. In
recent times, the English cricket has produced attacking players which include
Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali. Due to playing
in IPL, the England Cricket Team has improved as a T20I team.
Under the captaincy of Paul Collingwood, England won their
maiden ICC title by winning the World T20 played in 2010 against Australia. In
the last edition played in 2016, England reached the finals losing to West
Indies in a breath-taking final.
England has the record of the highest run chase in the World T20
World Cup history. They chased down a massive target of 230 runs win with 2
wickets remaining and with 2 balls to spare. Among the highest run-getters in
T20Is, Eoin Morgan has scored 2138 runs from 89 innings (87 innings) with the best
score of 123. Alex Hales has the highest individual score in World T20 with 116*
against Sri Lanka played in the 2014 edition.
Among the leading wicket-takers in T20Is for England, Stuart
Broad is at the top with 65 wickets from 56 matches ( 55 innings) with the best
figures of 4/24.
