This Day That Year: India beat Australia to register 2nd successive win in World Cup 2019
Thanks to all-round performance, India defeated 2015
World Champion Australia in a comfortable manner to register their 2nd
win played at Kennington Oval, London on 9th June 2019.
Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat
first. It was a cautious start by Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan who played
Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins according to the ball of the merit. At the end
of 10 overs, India was 41 for 0.
After the power play overs, both openers took on the
Australian bowlers by taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. After
failing in the first match against South Africa, the left-handed southpaw Dhawan
played with positive intent looking in complete control. Dhawan reached his
fifty off 53 balls. On the other hand, Rohit rotated the strike and reached his
half-century off 61 balls.
Coulter Nile broke the 128 runs stand as he dismissed Rohit
Sharma which bounced and went into the gloves off Alex Carey. The Indian
captain Virat Kohli came to the crease painting the momentum rotating the
strike and hitting bad balls away for boundaries. Dhawan was hit on the thumb
by Pat Cummins but reached a brilliant century off 95 balls.
The left-handed batsman showed his class and was dismissed
for a superb 117 off 109 balls. Kohli and Dhawan added 93 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Hardik Pandya promoted to number 4 in the batting order kept on the
momentum as was severe on spinners and played the pace bowlers with ease.
Hardik Pandya was dismissed for a superb 48 off 27 balls. Pandya and Kohli
added 81 runs for the 3rd wicket.
MS Dhoni came to the crease and created an impact right away
hitting a big six against Mitchell Starc. After reaching his fifty, the Indian
captain Kohli also played some lovely shots which put Australian bowlers under
pressure. Marcus Stoinis dismissed Kohli and MS Dhoni in the last over. KL
Rahul played a cameo to remain not out on 11 off 3 balls. India posted a
massive total of 352 for 5 in 50 overs.
Chasing 353 runs to win, Aaron Finch and David Warner played decently against Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. At the end of 10 overs, both
openers scored 48 for 0.
After the power play overs, a superb throw from Kedar Jadhav
and run out by Hardik Pandya ended Finch innings. Australia openers added 61
runs for the first wicket. The experienced duo of Steve Smith and Warner tried
to put the pressure on the Indian bowlers but could not do on a regular basis.
Warner completed his fifty off 77 balls. Yuzvendra Chahal was bought into the
attack and got the wicket of Warner. Warner and Smith added 72 runs for the 2nd
wicket.
Usman Khawaja and Smith took the attack on Indian bowlers.
After the 2nd drinks break, Smith completed his fifty off 60 balls.
Jasprit Bumrah made an important breakthrough dismissing Khawaja for 42.
Khawaja and Smith added 69 runs for the 3rd wicket. Glenn Maxwell came
at the crease and hit some lovely shots which tried to put pressure on Indian
bowlers. Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck an important blow to get rid of Smith. Smith
and Maxwell added 36 runs for the 4th wicket. Kumar then dismissed
Marcus Stoinis very next ball.
Glenn Maxwell also perished trying to hit another big shot
with a brilliant catch by Ravindra Jadeja. The wicket-keeper Alex Carey showed
his class playing some lovely shots. With the asking run-rate climbing, the
Indian bowlers kept on picking wickets to bowl out Australia for 316. Carey
completed his fifty just off 25 balls. India won the match by 36 runs to
register their 2nd successive win of World Cup 2019.
It was India’s only fourth in World Cup history between
these two top teams. In 2015, Australia defeated India in the Semi-finals.
India 352 for 5 in 50 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 117, Kohli 82,
Marcus Stoinis 2/62) beat Australia 316 in 50 overs (Steve Smith 69, Warner 56,
Carey 55*, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/50, Bumrah 3/61) by 36 runs.
For his brilliant 117 off 109 balls, Dhawan was awarded the
man of the match.
