This Day That Year: Kapil Dev magical innings in World Cup 1983
Thanks to Kapil Dev’s magical innings, India defeated
Zimbabwe in a Group B match played at Nevil Ground, Royal Turnbridge Wells on
18th June 1983.
Indian captain Kapil Dev won the toss and decided to bat
first. The decision did not pay off as Rawson and Curran had left India in tatters
at 9 for 4. Sunil Gavaskar, Kris Srikanth, Mohinder Amarnath, and Sandeep Patil
went cheaply. Yashpal Sharma could not score much as India lost half of the
side with 17 runs on the board.
Kapil Dev came to the crease and played with positive
intent. On the other hand, Roger Binny played the supporting role. Kapil and
Binny added 60 runs for the 6th wicket. Roger Binny and Ravi Shastri
went in quick succession to leave India in big trouble at 78 for 7. The captain
showed his class with some great hitting and putting pressure back on the Zimbabwean
bowlers. Madan Lal gave full support to Kapil Dev adding 62 runs for the 8th
wicket.
Kapil led from the front and showed his class with power-hitting
to complete his century off 72 balls. After completing his century, the Indian
captain was simply sensational hitting big shots to put enough pressure on Zimbabwe
bowlers. Syed Kirmani also played a crucial role by remaining not out on 24.
Kapil and Syed Kirmani added unbeaten 126 runs for the 9th wicket.
From a hopeless situation, Kapil Dev remained not out on 175 off 138 balls with
16 fours and 6 sixes.
From 17 for 5, India recovered to a respectable total of 266
for 8 in 60 overs. The Indian bowlers kept a tight line and length not allowing
the Zimbabwean batsmen to score runs easily. Curran was the top scorer for
Zimbabwe with 73. India bowled out Zimbabwe for 235 in 57 overs to register a
famous 31 runs win.
Kapil Dev brilliant 175 was India’s first century in World
Cup history. It remains one of the finest knocks by an Indian in ODIs. For his
match-winning knock, Kapil was awarded the man of the match.
India 266 for 8 in 60 overs ( Kapil Dev 175*, Syed Kirmani
24*, Curran 3/65, Rawson 3/47) beat Zimbabwe 235 in 57 overs ( KM Curran 73, RD
Brown 35, Madan Lal 3/42, Roger Binny 2/45) by 31 runs.
