This Day That Year: Netherlands shock England
In one of the biggest upset, Netherlands shocked the hosts
England in the opening match of the World T20 2009 played at Lords, London on 5th
June.
After winning the toss Netherlands captain Jeroen Smits won
the toss and decided to field first. Ravi
Bopara and Luke Wright got the hosts off to a positive start putting 51 runs in
the first six overs which put pressure on Netherlands bowlers.
Wright and Bopara batted
with confidence keeping the scoreboard ticking. Finally, the Netherlands got the
breakthrough experienced Ryan Ten Doeschate dismissed Bopara for 46. Bopara and
Wright added 112 runs in 11.2 overs.
The Netherlands made
a strong comeback by picking wickets at regular intervals of Owais Shah, Eoin
Morgan, Paul Collingwood. Wright completed his fifty off 37 balls and perished
for 71. England made a competitive total of 162 for 5 at the end of 20 overs. Ryan
Doeschate took 2 for 35 while Peter Seelar, Borren, and Schiferli took 1 wicket
each.
Chasing 163 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for the
Dutch as they lost an early wicket of Alex Kervezee in the very first over
itself. Darron Reekers played with positive intent and put pressure on England
bowlers by scoring a quickfire cameo with 20 off 13 balls. The Netherlands were 52
for 2 at the end of six overs.
Bas Zuiderent and Tom
de Grooth steadied the innings putting on 43 runs for the 3rd
wicket. De Grooth and Peter Borren stunned the England bowlers with their power-hitting
to add 50 runs for the 4th wicket put the Netherlands on a course of
a famous win.
With 7 runs needed to win off the last over, Both teams were tensed before Stuart Broad
missed a chance to run out to dismiss Schiferli and took 2 runs to help the Netherlands
create a major upset winning the match by 4 wickets.
For his 49 off 30 balls, de Grooth was awarded the man of
the match.
Netherlands 163 for 6 in 20 overs ( Tom de Grooth 49, Peter
Borren 30, James Anderson 3/23) beat England 162 for 5 in 20 overs ( Luke
Wright 71, Ravi Bopara 46, Ryan Doeschate 2/35) by 4 wickets.
