This Day That Year: Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in Champions Trophy 2017
Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in a low scoring thriller played
at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on 12th June 2017. Sarfaraz Ahmed led
side was placed with India, South Africa, and Sri Lanka in Group B.
Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed won the toss and decided to
field first. Nirshoan Dickwella looked in fine touch with attacking stroke
play. Junaid Khan got the breakthrough for Pakistan dismissing Gunathilka
cheaply. Kusal Mendis and Dickwella put Pakistani bowlers under pressure. At
the end of 10 overs, Sri Lanka were 50 for 1.
Dickwella and Mendis continued to play with positive intent
which made life tough for Pakistani bowlers. Hasan Ali provided much-needed
breakthrough dismissing Kusal Mendis. Mendis and Dickwella added 56 runs for
the 2nd wicket. Dickwella looked composed and reached his fifty off
52 balls. In the next over, Faheem
Ashraf got the wicket of Dinesh Chandimal to leave Sri Lanka at 83 for 3.
The experienced Angelo Mathews and Dickwela steadied the
innings for Sri Lanka taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Mohammad
Aamir broke a 78 runs stand as he got rid of Mathews. From 161 for 3, Pakistan
reduced Sri Lanka to 167 for 7. Suranga Lakmal and Gunaratne put on a crucial 46
runs stand for the 8th wicket which helped Lankans post a competitive
total that helped the pacers. Pakistan bowled out Sri Lanka for 236 in 49.2
overs.
Chasing 237 runs to win, Fakhar Zaman looked in sensational
touch putting pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers along with Azhar Ali. At the
end of 10 overs, Pakistan raced to 65 for 0.
Fakhar reached his fifty off 34 balls which helped Pakistan
lay a strong foundation. Nuwan Pradeep got the breakthrough getting the wicket
of Fakhar Zaman. Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Pradeep, and Lakmal produced a stunning
comeback for Sri Lanka reducing Pakistan to 162 for 7.
Sarfaraz Ahmed came to the crease and was given chances
thrice. Out of the three chances, one was run-out and twice dropped. He took advantage
of good stroke play along with Mohammad Aamir. The captain led from the front
by reaching his fifty off 71 balls. Both added unbeaten 75 runs for the 8th the wicket that helped Pakistan win the match by 3 wickets. By the virtue of this
win, Pakistan qualified for the semi-finals.
For his captains knock, Sarfaraz Ahmed was awarded the man
of the match.
Pakistan 237 for 7 in 44.5 overs (Sarfaraz Ahmed 61*, Fakhar
Zaman 50, Azhar Ali 34, Nuwan Pradeep 3/60) beat Sri Lanka 236 in 49.2 overs (
Dickwella 73, Mathews 39, Hasan Ali 3/43, Junaid Khan 3/40) by 3 wickets.
