England versus West Indies 2nd Test 1st Day: Dom Sibley and Stokes leads England recovery
Thanks to Sibley and Stokes partnership, England have ended
the 1st day of the 2nd Test match in a decent position
played at Old Trafford, Manchester on Thursday.
After a long rain delay break, West Indies captain Jason
Holder won the toss and decided to field first. Kemar Roach bowled well with
tight bowling. On the other hand, Shannon Gabriel was wayward and did make the
England openers play.
The West Indies captain Jason Holder bought Alazzari Joseph
into the attack but could not do any damage with his line and length. Soon
after, Holder bought himself and bowled steadily. At the stroke of lunch break,
Roston Chase got the breakthrough dismissing Rory Burns. Burns was given out
for LBW and he decided to review, as the decision was upheld. The umpires called
lunch with the score at 29 for 1.
It was an ideal start for Roston Chase as he got rid of Zak
Crawley off the first ball after the lunch break. After missing the first Test, Joe
Root returned and survived few anxious moments with edging through slips which
frustrated the West Indies bowlers. Roach got the ball to move to trouble the
England captain. On the other hand, Dom Sibley looked as solid as ever and
registered his first boundary off the 91st ball.
West Indies were dealt a major as Shannon Gabriel hobbled
off the field due to an injury. After the first drinks break, Joseph provided
the breakthrough as Root slashed a shot going into the hands of Holder. Root
and Sibley added 52 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Kemar Roach, Joseph bowled tight lines and lengths to Ben
Stokes. On the other hand, Dom Sibley remained solid. Roston Chase was bought
into the attack and almost got Sibley with a reaction catch by the short leg
fielder.
Kriagg Braithwaite was bought attack and did not do much
damage., Ben Stokes hit a six and remained not out with Sibley. England went
into the tea break at 112 for 3.
Roston Chase and Kemar Roach began the third session with
control not allowing Stokes and Sibley to score runs freely. Sibley reached his
fifty off 164 balls. On the other hand, Stokes struggled against Jason Holder.
He was nearly bowled round the leg off Chase bowling but played innovative
strokes to put West Indies bowlers under pressure.
After the injury, Shannon Gabriel almost got the wicket of Sibley,
but Holder dropped a simple catch at slips. Stokes remained solid enough and
reached his fifty off 118 balls. West Indies were desperate for a wicket as
Roach asked for a review that was given not out. The decision was upheld it
was an umpire's call. Despite some brilliant bowling, England ended the first day
on 207 for 3. Stokes and Sibley have put on unbeaten 126 runs for the 4th
wicket.
