England versus West Indies 2nd Test 3rd Day: Rain Washed out entire day
It was a disappointing day for cricket fans as the 3rd
Day of the 2nd Test match played at Old Trafford, Manchester was washed
out without a bowl being bowled on Saturday.
After a superb performance with the bat by England posting 469
for 9, Sam Curran eked out the wicket of John Campbell late on day 2 but was
denied the chance. The weather forecast for the entire day was for rain and it
proved it right. It is a major blow for the hosts as they would have fancied their
chances to bowl out West Indies today.
With the weather better for the next two days, England would
be hoping to make use of the conditions and bowl West Indies out quick in the first
innings. On the other hand, West Indies would be happy to see an entire day’s play
washed out.
There was consistent rain in the first session and the
umpire called lunch. After the break, the rain continued, and players had to
wait for the rain to clear. Despite ground staff efforts, umpires called tea and
then decided to call off play.
The England Cricket Team was given a massive surprise as
they were defeated by West Indies in the first Test match at Southampton by 4
wickets. In the 2nd Test match, it was a superb batting effort by
Stokes, Sibley who stitched a massive 260 runs stand for the 4th
wicket. Stokes 176, Sibley 120, and useful contributions helped England declare
their innings on 469 for 9.
Stokes and Sibley batted too slowly on the 2nd
morning. If West Indies can draw the match, it would be a massive feat as they
were struggling big time and retain the Wisden Trophy that they won in West Indies last year.
West Indies ended the 2nd day on 32 for 1. The
visitors would begin the fourth day on the same score. It would be interesting
if England bowlers can bowl out Windies before the follow-on target.
West Indies 32 for 1 in 14 overs (Joseph 14*,
Braithwaite 5*, Curran 1/8) trail England 469 for 9 d in 162 overs (Stokes 176,
Sibley 120, Buttler 40, Chase 5/172, Roach 2/58) by 437 runs.
