PV Sindhu- the Golden Girl of Indian badminton


PV Sindhu has become the golden girl of Indian badminton after Saina Nehwal. She turns 25 today and achieved a lot of medals in her international career so far.

Sindhu won a gold medal in the Asian Junior Championships played at Gimcheon in 2012 in the singles category.  Apart from that, she won a bronze medal in the singles and mixed team event during the 2011 edition played in Lucknow.

She made her international debut in 2009. To date, Sindhu has a total career record of 326 wins and 139 losses. Apart from that, she has won so far 15 titles.

Her performance has been exceptional in World Championships. In the 2013 and 2014 editions, Sindhu won a bronze medal. She bettered her performance in the 2017 edition winning the silver medal losing to Nozomi Okuhara in the 2nd longest matches in women’s singles. She faltered again in the 2018 edition finishing second played at Nanjing. 

She was a part of the team which won the historic bronze medal of the prestigious Uber Cup twice. It has been an amazing journey for the Indian star. 

In the 2019 edition played at Basel, Sindhu delivered in an emphatic manner as she defeated Okuhara in a one-sided final 21-7, 21-7. She became the first Indian player to win the World Badminton Championships.

The turning point of PV Sindhu came when she became the first Indian female player to win a silver medal in Olympic history. She defied all odds and produced some brilliant badminton qualifying for the finals. It was an amazing performance by Sindhu who lost an absolute thriller to Carolina Marin 21-19, 12-21, 15-21. The Indian girl showed great determination but did not handle pressure well.
As of April 2017, Sindhu rose to her career-best rankings of 2nd. After winning the World Championship in 2019, she has been struggling to lose in the first or second round. In 2017, She became the first Indian to win the Korea Open defeating Okuhara 22-20, 11-21, 21-18.

In the 2018 edition of the Asian Games played at Jakarta, Sindhu came 2nd as she lost to Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei. During 2014 edition at Incheon, she was a part of the team which won the bronze medal in the team event.

PV Sindhu also qualified for the BWF World Tour finals in 2018 edition. She defeated Akane Yamaguchi, top-seeded Tai Tzu Ying, and Zhang Beiwen during the Group Stage. In the semi-finals, she defeated Ratchnok Intanon.

It was an amazing performance by Sindhu who defeated Okuhara in two sets thriller to become the only Indian to win end year title. In year 2019, she qualified for the World tour finals because of the World Championship victory.

Sindhu could not defend her title as she lost to Chen Yufei 1-2 and Yamaguchi 1-2. In her last match, she defeated He Bingjao to finish 3rd in the Group.

With the Tokyo Olympics postponed next year, Sindhu would be looking to change the color of the medal and bring a gold medal.
