This Day That Year: Bhuvneshwar Kumar career best figures in Test matches
After Rahane 103 in the first innings that took India to a competitive
total of 295, it was the turn of Bhuvneshwar Kumar producing a magical spell in the
1st innings of the 2nd Test match played at Lords, London
on 18-19th July 2014.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar got the early breakthrough by getting rid
of Alistair Cook going straight into the hands of MS Dhoni. He then dismissed
the other England, Sam Robinson, to put the hosts under trouble.
Ian Bell and Gary Balance put on 39 runs for the 3rd
wicket before Kumar produced a beauty to get rid of Bell. Balance looked in complete
control with positive stroke play. MS Dhoni took the 2nd new ball
after and immediately got the results by dismissing Balance with a tickle down
the leg to Dhoni.
England ended the 2nd Day on 219 for 6. Kumar
produced a magical delivery to dismiss Ben Stokes and then Stuart Broad to pick
his career-best figures in Test matches. He finished with figures of 6 for 82
in 31 overs. His spell restricted England to 319 runs with a lead of 24 runs.
This was Bhuvneshwar Kumar's first Test match at the iconic Lords Cricket Ground. He also registered his name on the honors board.
The right-arm swing bowler made his Test debut for India
against Australia on 22nd February 2013 at Chennai. He bowled 13
overs and gave away 52 runs in the first innings while he did not get any
chance to bowl.
So far, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has played a total of 21 Test matches
(37 innings) and taken 63 wickets. He has grabbed five wickets in an innings
four times while four-wicket hauls thrice.
He played his last Test match during the 3rd Test
match against South Africa at Johannesburg on 24th January 2018. It
was an amazing performance by Kumar who took 3 for 44 in the first innings
including the wickets of AB de Villiers, Dean Elgar, and Aiden Markram.
In the 2nd innings, he took 1 for 39. Due to his
valuable contributions in both innings, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was awarded the man
of the match. The Indian team lost the Test series 1-2.
Since then Kumar has suffered a lot of injuries. The pace trio
of Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah has played a key role in India’s success in Test matches by picking 20 wickets in England,
South Africa, and Australia. Despite their efforts, the Indian Cricket Team lost
the Test series in South Africa and England.
