This Day That Year: Chris Gayle played his last World Cup game


The explosive left-handed batsman Chris Gayle featured in his last World game against Afghanistan during the 2019 edition played at Headingly on 4th July.

West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and decided to bat first. Chris Gayle’s last innings did not go well as he was dismissed for 7 off 18 balls by Dawlat Zadran. Evin Lewis 58, Shai Hope 77, Shimron Hetymer 39 off 31 balls, Nicolas Pooran 58 off 43, Holder 45 off 34 balls and a quickfire 14 off 4 balls by Carlos Braithwaite helped West Indies post a big total of 311 for 6 in 50 overs.

It was a spirited chase by the Afghanistan side as they scored 288 runs. Ikram Alikhil 86, Rahmat Shah 62, Asghar Afghan 40 off 32 balls, Najibullah Zadran 31 off 38 balls and a quickfire cameo by Sayed Shirzad 25 off 17 balls were not enough to chase down the target.

Chris Gayle made his World Cup debut for West Indies in the 2003 edition played in South Africa and Zimbabwe. He played a total of 35 matches (34 innings) with 1186 runs. His career-best score in World Cup history was 215 against Zimbabwe played at Manuka Oval, Canberra. Gayle smashed a total of 2 centuries and 6 half-centuries in World Cup history.

The explosive left-handed batsman has entertained the crowd with his big-hitting. He made his ODI debut in 1999 and played a total of 301 matches (294 innings). Gayle is the 2nd West Indies player to score 10,000 runs in ODI format. He struggled in the 2015 World Cup due to an injury.
Gayle was out of the team due to an injury and selection issue. He returned to the ODI squad during the home ODI matches against England in 2019. His performance was simply sensational with breathtaking batting.

In the 2019 edition of the World Cup, Gayle looked in decent touch during some games but failed to deliver against top-quality sides. His contributions will be remembered for his big-hitting abilities.
