This Day That Year: England hammer Australia to reach 2019 WC finals
The England Cricket Team produced a dominating performance
as they defeated Australia in the 2nd Semi-finals played at
Edgbaston, Birmingham of World Cup 2019 on 11th July.
Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to
bat first. It was not an ideal start as Australia lost 3 quick wickets of Aaron
Finch, Warner, and Handscomb in the first few overs. Archer dismissed Australian
captain Finch while Woakes got wickets of Warner and Handscomb to leave
Australia in big trouble at 14 for 3.
At the end of 10 overs, Australia was struggling at 27 for
3. Steve Smith and Alex Carey looked in decent touch against top quality
bowling of England. The conditions were helpful for the fast bowlers which made
life tough for the Aussies batsmen. Smith looked in decent touch while Carey
played with positive intent. Smith completed his half-century off 72 balls.
Adil Rashid got the breakthrough dismissing Carey. Carey and Smith added 103
runs for the 4th wicket. Rashid dismissed Marcus Stoinis off the
very next ball to leave Australia in trouble again.
Glenn Maxwell played a quickfire cameo but was dismissed by
Archer. Smith and Mitchell Starc showed some intent against the England bowlers
putting on 51 runs for the 8th wicket. Smith was brilliantly run out
by Buttler for a well made 85. Australia was bowled out for a modest total of
223 in 49 overs.
Chasing 224 runs to win, the England openers Jason Roy and
Jonny Bairstow was in attacking mood right from the word go. At the end of 10
overs, both scored 50 for 0.
Roy and Bairstow made the batting look easy putting enough
pressure on the Aussies bowling line up. Roy completed his fifty off 50 balls
and kept the scoreboard ticking. Australia finally got the breakthrough
dismissing Bairstow for 34. Bairstow and Roy added 124 runs in 17.2 overs. Roy
was simply unstoppable with his attacking stroke play. His innings came to end
by Cummins for 85. Joe Root and captain Eoin Morgan completed the formalities
for England as they put on unbeaten 79 runs for the 3rd wicket to
lead the hosts to a commanding 8 wicket win.
This was their first finals since the 1992 World Cup played
in Australia and New Zealand. Right from the word go, England dominated
Australia in all departments.
For his brilliant spell of 3 for 20 in 8 overs, Woakes was
awarded the man of the match.
England 226 for 2 in 32.1 overs (Jason Roy 85, Root 49*,
Morgan 45*, Cummins 1/34) beat Australia 223 in 49 overs ( Steve Smith 85,
Carey 46, Woakes 3/20, Rashid 3/54) by 8 wickets.
