New Zealand captain Suzie Bates won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for the White Ferns as they dismissed Indian openers Punam Raut and Smriti Mandhana cheaply. Indian captain Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur steadied the innings taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries.

The experienced duo played according to the situation and kept on ticking the scoreboard despite tight bowling by White Ferns bowling. Raj was superb with her stroke play to reach her 50th half-century off 71 balls. On the other hand, Kaur looked solid and struggled for a while.

Kaur played the White Ferns decently to reach her fifty off 82 balls. Leigh Kasperek eventually got the breakthrough dismissing Kaur. Kaur and Raj added 132 runs for the 3rd wicket. Deepti Sharma was dismissed for 0. Veda Krishna Murthy came to the crease and upped the ante with her positive strokes making life tough for White Ferns bowlers. She got wickets from Sophie Devine.
