The Indian Cricket Team dream’s of winning the World Cup
were shattered as they lost to New Zealand in two day first semi-finals played
at Old Trafford, Manchester on 10th July 2019.
On 9th July, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson
won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for Kiwis as
Martin Guptill was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah for 1 run. Henry Nicholls and
captain Kane Williamson looked cautious. At the end of 10 overs, New Zealand
scored 27 for 1.
Henry Nicholls and Williamson never looked comfortable but
remained steady taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Ravindra
Jadeja produced a beauty to dismiss Henry Nicholls ending 68 runs stand for the
2nd wicket. Ross Taylor came to the crease and struggled with his timing.
On the other hand, Kiwi captain Williamson looked was also struggling.
Williamson played with responsibility to reach his fifty off 79 balls.
Yuzvendra Chahal got the breakthrough dismissing Williamson. The experienced duo
added 65 runs for the 3rd wicket.
James Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme added valuable runs
along with Ross Taylor. De Grandhomme and Taylor put on 38 runs for the 5th
wicket. Taylor completed his fifty off 73 balls. With the scoreboard reading
211 for 5 in 46.1 overs, rain arrived, and the match was shifted to the reserve
day.
Ravindra Jadeja produced a brilliant one-handed pick-up
throw to run out Ross Taylor. Jadeja did the job again by taking a good catch
off Tom Latham. It was a good bowling effort by the Indians as restricted New
Zealand to 239 for 8.
Matt Henry and Trent Boult broke the backbone of the Indian
batting line up by picking three big wickets of Rohit Sharma, Kohli and KL
Rahul to leave India in big trouble at 5 for 3. Rishabh Pant was promoted at
number 4 while Dinesh Karthik at number 5. Dinesh Karthik struggled with his technique
and caught brilliantly by James Neesham. At the end of 10 overs, India was in
big trouble at 24 for 4.
Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant rescued the Indian innings
putting on 47 runs for the 5th wicket. The Indian batsmen played
with lots of caution against Mitchell Santer. Pant played a rash stroke and was
caught at the boundary by Colin de Grandhomme. Hardik Pandya also gave his
wicket away playing a bad stroke to leave India in trouble at 92 for 6.
Ravindra Jadeja looked in fine touch putting the pressure on
the Kiwis bowlers. On the other hand, MS Dhoni kept on rotating the strike and
hit occasional boundaries. Jadeja took on Mitchell Santer and completed his
fifty off just 39 balls. With 32 off 14 balls, India’s hopes were dented as
Jadeja was dismissed by Boult. Jadeja and Dhoni added 116 runs for the 7th
wicket.
With 31 runs needed off 2 overs, MS Dhoni smashed a six off
the very first ball from Ferguson to reach his fifty off 72 balls. Martin
Guptill produced a direct hit to dismiss Dhoni ending India’s hopes. India lost
the first semi-finals by 18 runs. It was a heartbreaking moment for 1.3 million Indian
fans.
For his match-winning spell of 3 for 43, Matt Henry was
awarded the man of the match.
New Zealand 239 for 8 in 50 overs (Ross Taylor 74,
Williamson 67, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/43) beat India 221 in 49.3 overs (Ravindra
Jadeja 77, Dhoni 50, Matt Henry 3/37, Trent Boult 2/42) by 18 runs.
