This Day That Year: Sri Lanka posted the highest team total in ODIs
The Sri Lankan Cricket Team posted the highest ever total in
men’s ODI against the Netherlands played at Amstelveen on 4th July 2006.
Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayewardene won the toss and
decided to bat first. It was a flying start for the Sri Lankan team as Sanath
Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara put on a dominating display of batting. The experienced
duo smashed the Netherlands bowlers. Kumar Sangakkara was dismissed in the 28th
over for a quickfire 46 off 43 balls. Sangakkara and Jayasuriya added 149 runs
for the 3rd wicket.
Tillakaratne Dilshan joined with Sanath Jayasuriya to put
the Netherlands bowlers under immense pressure. It was a brilliant display of
batting by the explosive Jayasuriya who was dismissed for an attacking 157 off
104 balls with 24 fours and 1 six.
TM Dilshan made the batting look easy and kept on scoring
runs with ease. Farveez Maharoof also contributed a quickfire 31 off 25 balls. Maharoof
and Dilshan added 81 runs for the 6th wicket. Despite the fall of
quick wickets in the death overs, Sri Lanka posted 443 for 9 in 50 overs.
Dilshan remained not out on 117 off 78 balls with 15 fours and 2 sixes.
Sri Lanka registered the highest ever total in men’s ODI
cricket. They broke South Africa’s record of 438 runs that they chased against
Australia at Wanders, Johannesburg. Chasing 444 runs to win, Netherlands was
bowled out for 248 runs. Sri Lanka won the match by a massive 195 runs.
Sri Lanka’s record of 443 remained intact for 10 years
before England posted 444 runs against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in 2016. It was
an amazing batting performance by the Sri Lankan Cricket Team who smashed the
Netherlands bowling line up to all parts of the ground.
This was the first time that Sri Lanka posted 400 plus total
in ODIs. Chasing a massive target of 415, Sri Lanka made 411 for 8 against
India at Rajkot in the 2009/10 season.
For his 157 off 104 balls, Sanath Jayasuriya was named the
man of the match award.
Sri Lanka 443 for 9 in 50 overs (Sanath Jayasuriya 157, TM Dilshan
117*, Stelling 2/77, Kashif 2/79) beat Netherlands 248 in 48.3 overs (
