CPL 2020 Match 1: Trinbago Knight Riders beat Guyana Amazon Warriors in a thriller
It was an amazing start to the tournament as Trinbago Knight
Riders defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors in the opening match of CPL 2020 played
at Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Trinidad on Tuesday.
Trinbago Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard won the toss
and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for TKR as Ali Khan dismissed
Brandon King off the third ball that top edges going into the hands of Lendl
Simmons at the point.
The pitch was tough to bat on as Hetymer struggled to score
runs. Sunil Narine got the wicket of Chanderpaul Hemraj with a return catch.
With the match reduced to 17 overs side, the power play overs was reduced to 5
overs. At the end of 5 overs, Guyana Amazon Warriors scored 32 for 2.
The experienced Ross Taylor came to the crease and put the
TKR bowlers under immense pressure. Taylor hit the first six of CPL 2020 with a
slog sweep. Taylor looking good was dismissed by Sunil Narine. Taylor and
Hetymer added 50 runs for the 3rd wicket. Pooran came to the crease
and hit some lusty blows.
Trying to hit another big shot, Pooran was dismissed for 18.
Hetymer and Pooran added 38 runs for the 4th wicket. Sherfane
Rutherford could open his account. After a slow start from Hetymer, he upped
the ante in the end overs and completed his fifty off 38 balls. Keemo Paul also
played a vital hand. Hetymer remained not out on 63 as Guyana Amazon Warriors
posted 144 for 5 in 17 overs.
Chasing 145 runs to win, it was a slow start by TKR openers.
Lendl Simmons looked out of sorts as the pressure was mounting. Naveen-ul- Haq deceived
Simmons with a slower bouncer to dismiss him. At the end of 5 overs, TKR scored
30 for 1.
Sunil Narine took the attack to Guyana Amazon Warriors
bowlers. Colin Munro played with positive intent hitting some big shots. Shephard
dismissed Munro to break 34 runs stand for the 2nd wicket.
Narine smashed Imran Tahir for 17 runs and put TKR on course
for a win. It was an aggressive inning by Narine reaching his fifty off just
28 balls. On the other hand, Darren Bravo kept rotating the strike. Tahir got
the breakthrough dismissing Narine for 50. Narine and Bravo added 44 runs for
the 3rd wicket.
Despite the fall wickets, in the end, Dwayne Bravo hit the
winning runs to help TKR win the match by 4 wickets with 2 balls to spare.
For his all-round performance, Narine was awarded the man of
the match.
Trinbago Knight Riders 147 for 6 in 16.4 overs ( Sunil
Narine 50, Darren Bravo 30, Naveen-ul-Haq 2/21, Imran Tahir 2/40) beat Guyana
Amazon Warriors ( Hetymer 63*, Ross Taylor 33, Narine 2/19) by 4 wickets.
