CPL 2020 Match 2: Barbados Tridents starts the tournament with a close win
The defending Champions Barbados Tridents started the
tournament with a close over ST Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the 2nd
match of CPL 2020 played at Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Trinidad on Tuesday.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots captain Rayad Emrit won the toss
and decided to field first. It was an ideal start as Sheldon Cottrell and
Sohail Tanvir reduced Barbados to 8 for 3. Cottrell dismissed Johnson Charles
and Corey Anderson while Tanvir got rid of dangerous Shai Hope.
Kyle Mayers and Barbados captain Jason Holder steadied the
innings with aggressive stroke play to put pressure on Kitts bowlers. At the
end of the first six overs, Tridents recovered and scored 51 for 3.
Kitts captain Emrit got the breakthrough dismissing
dangerous Mayers. Mayers and Holder added 61 runs for the 4th
wicket. After the fall of Mayers's wicket, Nevis and Patriots bowlers kept on
picking wickets at regular intervals. From 128 for 9 in the 17th
over, Rashid Khan played a blinder of an innings remaining not out on 26 off 20
balls. Tridents posted 153 for 9 at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing 154 runs to win, Chris Lynn and Evin Lewis had
started off decently putting on 30 runs. A superb bowling display by Mitchell
Santer got the breakthrough dismissing Lynn. At the end of 6 overs, Nevis and
Patriots scored 33 for 1.
A superb run out by Rashid Khan ended the innings for
struggling Evin Lewis. Ben Dunk looked in serious touch with some lusty blows
while J Da Silva rotated the strike. The left-arm Kiwi spinner Santer struck
again to get rid of Dunk. Dunk and Da Silva put on 50 runs for the 3rd
wicket.
Rashid Khan proved his mettle again by getting rid of Denesh
Ramdin and Hamilton in the same over to put Nevis and Patriots batsmen under
pressure. With 20 runs required off the last over, Sohail Tanvir tried his best
but fell short of the target by just.
For his 20 and 2 for 18, Mitchell Santer was named the man
of the match award.
Barbados Tridents 153 for 9 in 20 overs ( Jason Holder 38, Mayers 37, Sheldon Cottrell 2/16, Emrit 2/16) beat St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 147 for 5 in 20 overs ( J Da Silva 41*, Dunk 34, Santer 2/18, Rashid Khan 2/27) by 6 runs.
