This Day That year: Anil Kumble made his only Test century
One of the greatest spinners in the world, Anil Kumble
registered his only Test century of 2nd Day in the 3rd
Test match against hosts England played at the Kennington Oval, London on 10th
August 2007.
Starting the 2nd day at 316 for 4 with Sachin
Tendulkar and VVS Laxman at the crease, both looked in great touch putting the
England bowlers under pressure. Laxman completed his fifty off 65 balls and was
soon dismissed by Tremlett. Laxman and Tendulkar added 78 runs for the 5th
wicket.
MS Dhoni came to the crease and continued to show his skills
along with Sachin. Before the lunch break, genius Tendulkar was dismissed for
82. Dhoni and Sachin added 63 runs for the 6th wicket. India went
into the lunch break at 429 for 6.
Anil Kumble joined the party along with Dhoni. Kumble faced
the English bowlers with solid defense and hit bad balls away for boundaries. Dhoni
was finally dismissed for a quickfire 92 off 81 balls. Dhoni and Kumble added
91 runs for the 7th wicket. Kumble reached his half-century off 109
balls.
The Indian Cricket Team went into the tea break in a
commanding position at 559 for 7. After the tea break, Kumble continued attacking
approach while the tailenders gave him full support. Zaheer Khan, RP Singh scored
11 runs each. Along with Kumble, Zaheer Khan, RP Singh added vital runs to help
Team India create a big impact.
Sreesanth came to the crease and contributed 35 off 32
balls. In the due course, Anil Kumble reached his maiden Test century off 180
balls. Sreesanth and Kumble added 73 runs for the final wicket. Kumble remained
not out on 110 off 193 balls. India posted a mammoth total of 664 all out.
Anil Kumble became the oldest Indian player to score his
first Test century at the age of 36 years and 297 days. He played a total of
132 matches (173 innings) and scored 2506 runs with 1 century and 5 half-centuries.
The 3rd Test match played at Oval was known for
the jelly beans incident. Despite that, Kumble remained calm and helped Team
India posted a massive total in the first innings.
