This Day That Year: England became number 1 ranked side
For the first time, England became the number 1 ranked Test
side, as they defeated India by a massive margin, played at Edgbaston, Birmingham
on 12th August 2011.
England captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and decided to field
first. It was a great bowling effort by the host's bowlers as they reduced India
to 111 for 7. MS Dhoni and Praveen Kumar added 84 runs for the 8th
wicket. James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and Tim Bresnan bowled out India for 224.
Stuart Broad and Tim Bresnan took 4 wickets each while Anderson 2.
The England openers Andrew Strauss and Cook began off to a
solid start as they ended day 1 on 84 for 0. It was another dominating day for
the hosts on day 2. Strauss and Cook continued their attacking stroke play as
they added 186 runs. Cook made the batting look easy to pile on the misery on Indian
bowlers.
Cook along with Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen put on big
partnerships. At the end of day 2, England ended in a commanding position at
456 for 3 with Cook remaining not out on 182. The third day saw Cook pile on
the misery and continued to create pressure. Eoin Morgan also contributed with
104. Tim Bresnan scored 53 not out. With the dismal of Cook on 294 off 545
balls, England declared their innings on a massive total of 710 for 7.
James Anderson got the early breakthrough dismissing
Virender Sehwag. India ended the 3rd day at 35 for 1. Apart from MS
Dhoni 74*, Sachin Tendulkar 40, Praveen Kumar 40, England kept on picking
wickets at regular intervals to bowl out the visitors for 244. By virtue of
this win, the hosts won the match by an innings and 242 runs.
Since making their Test debut on 15th March 1877
against Australia, England became the number 1 ranked side. It was a dominating
performance by the hosts who outplayed India and whitewashed India by 4-0.
England 710 for 7 in 188.1 overs ( Alistair Cook 294, Eoin
Morgan 194, Amit Mishra 3/150) beat India 224 in 62.2 overs ( Dhoni 77, Gambhir
38, Broad 4/53, Bresnan 4/62) and 244 in 55.3 overs ( MS Dhoni 74*, Sachin
Tendulkar 40, Anderson 4/85) by an innings and 242 runs.
