This Day That Year: Hardik Pandya scored his maiden Test century
The hard-hitting all-rounder from India, Hardik Pandya
scored his maiden Test century against Sri Lanka during the 2nd day
of the 3rd Test match played at Palleke International Stadium on 13th
August 2017.
Indian captain Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first.
It was an ideal start as KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan plundered Sri Lankan
bowling line up adding 188 runs. Hardik Pandya came at the crease after the
fall of Ashwin’s wicket. At the end of day 1, India ended at 329 for 6.
India lost an early wicket of Wriddhman Saha at the start of
day 2. Hardik Pandya looked in great touch putting the pressure on the Sri
Lankan bowling line up. He was severe with his stroke play and completed his
fifty off 61 balls. Pandya teed off against Malinda Pushpkumara as he smashed
26 runs. It was the most runs by an Indian player in an over in Test matches.
Hardik Pandya completed his maiden Test century off 86
balls. He was finally dismissed for an attacking 108 off 96 balls with 8 fours
and 7 sixes. His knock helped India post an imposing total of 487.
Pandya also surpassed Virender Sehwag’s score in a single
session. During his 26 runs over against Pushpkumara, 3 sixes and 2 fours. It
was a dominating performance by Virat Kohli’s side.
Pandya made his Test debut against Sri Lanka on 26th
July 2017 against Sri Lanka at Galle. He has played only 11 matches (18
innings) and scored 532 runs with a career-best score of 108. During his short
Test career so far, the all-rounder hit so far 1 century and 4 half-centuries.
He has taken so far 17 wickets from 11 matches (19 innings) with
career-best figures of 5 for 28 against England in 2018 at Trent Bridge,
Nottingham. Since his last Test match at Southampton in 2018, Pandya has been
struggling with injuries.
