This Day That Year: Indian star won a historic medal at Olympics

Sindhu became the first Indian women’s player to win a silver medal played at the
Riocentro Convention and Event Centre.
Sindhu took on Spain Carolina Marin in the women’s singles
finals. It was a strong start by the Indian player who played with aggression
and made life tough for the World Champion. After the break, Marin came back
strongly putting pressure on Sindhu. From 16-19 down, Sindhu bounced back with vengeance
and took 5 points in succession to take the first game at 21-19.
In the 2nd game, Marin played with aggression and
never allowed the Indian a chance to come back into the game-winning it easily
at 21-12 to make the tie at 1-1. The deciding game saw Carolina Marin started
off to an aggressive start taking a 6-1 lead. Sindhu never gave up and from 4-9
down came back strongly leveling the game at 10-10.
At the interval, Carolina Marin had a slender lead of 11-10.
Marin stepped up the game after the interval as Sindhu committed errors to win
the third game at 21-15 to win the Olympic title.
Saina Nehwal became the first Indian women’s player to win a
medal at the Olympics. She won the bronze medal at the London Olympics 2012.
PV Sindhu was clubbed with Michelle Lee of Canada and Laura
Sarosi in Group M. The Indian started the tournament with a comfortable win
over Sarosi by 21-8, 21-9 in her first match. She faced a tough challenge in
her second match against Li. After losing the first game 19-21, Sindhu came
back strongly to win it 21-15, 21-17 to move into the next round.
In the quarterfinals, Sindhu took on tough opponent Wang
Yihan. It was a close-fought game as the Indian held her nerves to win it
22-20, 21-19 to move into the semi-finals. Her brilliant performance continued as
she defeated Nozomi Okuhara in the semi-finals by 21-19, 21-10 to become the
first Indian female player to qualify for the finals.
It was an epic final between the top two female badminton
players in the world. After coming back strongly in the first game, Sindhu
looked out of sorts committing lots of errors. Despite losing the finals, her
performance was sensational as she prepared hard before the Olympics. It was Sindhu's first Olympic Games.
She worked on her weakness and is now a star in Indian
badminton. On that day, every Indian fan was watching the finals with eagerness.
