This Day That Year: Nepal recorded their maiden ODI win

It was a historic moment for Nepal as they registered their maiden ODI win over the Netherlands played at VRA Cricket Ground, Amstelveen on 3rd August 2018.

Nepal captain Paras Khadka won the toss and decided to bat first. Gyandera Malla and wicketkeeper Khakurel started off cautiously before Fred Klassen dismissed Malla. Nepal openers added 29 runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first 10 overs, the visitors were 42 for 2.

Nepal captain Paras Khadka played with intent milking the bowling and hitting bad balls away for boundaries. Khadka reached his fifty off 65 balls with a six. Peter Seelar dismissed Nepal captain Khadka for 51. Karni came to the crease and took the attack to the Netherlands bowling line up. He showed his class and reached fifty off just 38 balls. It was Nepal’s fastest fifty off all time. The leg-spinner Lammichhane gave Karni good support. He and Lammichhane added 41 runs for the 9th wicket.

It was a good bowling effort by the hosts as they bowled out Nepal for 216 in 48.5 overs. Fred Klassen was the pick of the bowlers for The Netherlands with 3 for 38.

Nepal got off to a perfect start as Karni dismissed Stephen Myburgh for 0 in the first over. Ben Cooper and Braak added 30 runs before Lalit Bhandari took Ben Cooper’s wicket. At the end of 10 overs, Netherlands were 36 for 2.

Wesley Barresi was in decent touch right from the word go and steadied the innings along with Braak. Barresi reached his fifty off 66 balls. With things looking dangerous for Nepal, Lammichhane struck to dismiss Braak. Braak and Barresi added 84 runs for the 3rd wicket. Nepal bowlers made a strong comeback as they reduced hosts to 143 for 6. Netherlands captain Pieter Seelar played captains knock but was dismissed by Khadka.

The match went right down to the wire as the Netherlands needed 6 runs off 6 balls. Khadka was trusted for the final over. He just gave away just 4 runs off 4 balls. Fred Klassen was run out to give Nepal a thrilling 1 run win and their first-ever ODI win.

Nepal earned their ODI status on 15th March 2018. They played their first ODI on 1st August. So far, they have played 10 matches with 5 wins and 5 losses.

Nepal 216 in 48.5 overs ( Karni 61, Khadka 51, Fred Klassen 3/38) beat Netherlands 215 in 50 overs ( Wesley Barresi 71, Braak 39, Lammichhane 3/41) by 1 run.
