This Day That Year: Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag won Super 500 Thailand Open

The young Indian pair of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty created history as they won Super 500 Thailand Open played at Bangkok, Thailand on 4th August 2019.

It was an amazing performance by the Indian pair who defeated number 3rd ranked Chinese pair of Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen in grueling three sets by 21-19, 18-21, 21-18 to win their first major title at an international level.

The Indian pair was against a formidable Chinese opponent who won the World Champion. It was a positive start for the Indians as they equaled the score 3-3 and then took a 10-6 lead. After the interval, the Chinese pair came back strongly to level the score at 14-14. RankiReddy and Chirag played with an attacking approach to make it 20-18. Despite the Chinese took the next point, the Indian pair held their nerves winning the first game at 21-19.

It was a great start for the Indian pair in the 2nd the game also taking a 6-2 lead. The Chinese pair reduced the gap to 5-6. At the interval, Chirag and RankiReddy had slender 11-10 lead. After the interval, Liu and Li leveled the score at 11-11. The Chinese pair took 2 points in succession to take a 13-11 lead before the Indian pair equaled the score at 13-13. Satwik and Chirag played with aggressive intent taking 16-14 and then 18-16 lead before Chinese took 5 points in succession to take the third game into the decider.

In the third and final game, the Indian pair looked out of sorts at the start but managed to level the score at 6-6. It was a great performance by Chirag and RankiReddy who showed their class making life tough for the Chinese pair. Li and Liu came back strongly to reduce the gap to 18-19. Indian pair held their nerves to win 2 successive points winning the game at 21-18.

Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty began the tournament with a three-set win over Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy by 21-11, 24-26, 21-11 to move into the 2nd round. The Indian pair stunned higher ranked pair of Alfian and Ardianto of Indonesia in two straight sets by 21-17, 21-19 to move into the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, the Indian pair defeated Korean pair of Choi S-g and Seo-s-j in three sets by 21-17, 17-21, 21-19 to move into the semi-finals. It was an amazing pair by Satwik and Chirag who defeated Ko Sung-Hyun and Shin Baek-Chol in grueling three-set by 22-20, 20-22, 21-19 to qualify for their first finals.

Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty played some great badminton in the entire tournament stunning top-quality doubles pair in the world. Due to this performance, the Indian pair jumped up to number 9th in the rankings. As of 17th March 2020, they are currently at number 10th position.
