This Day That Year: Stuart Broad magical spell
Stuart Broad produced one of the best spells on English soil
as he wrecked the Australian batting line up during the 1st Day of the
4th Ashes Test match played at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on 6th
August 2015.
England captain Alistair Cook won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start for the hosts as Broad dismissed Chris Roger
caught by Cook at slips in the very first over. Broad then dismissed Steve
Smith with another beauty to leave Australia in trouble at 10 for 2.
Broad produced another stunning delivery to dismiss Shaun
Marsh with a good catch by Ian Bell. He then got rid of Adam Voges with a
one-handed catch by Stokes to leave the visitors in tatters at 21 for 5. He continued
to wreck the Australian batting line up as he dismissed Michael Clarke. The experienced
bowler took wickets of Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Johnson with pitched up deliveries.
Broad finished off the Australian batting by getting the
wicket of Nathan Lyon to bowl out the visitors for a paltry total of 60. It was
an amazing bowling performance as he took 8 for 15 in just 9.3 overs.
The hosts batted with lots of confidence. Joe Root was the
top scorer with 130, Jonny Bairstow 74, Moeen Ali 38 and Stuart Broad 24 helped
England declare their innings on 391 for 9. For Australia, Starc finished with
figures of 6 for 111.
In the second innings, Broad took the wicket of Steve Smith.
Stokes did the damage with 6 for 36 in 21 overs to bowl out Australia for 253.
England won the match by an innings and 78 runs to regain the Ashes.
It was an amazing performance by the England team who
dominated the visitors right from the word go. For his 8 for 15 in 9.3 overs,
Broad was named the man of the match.
England 391 for 9 in 85.2 overs ( Joe Root 130, Jonny
Bairstow 74, Mitchell Starc 6/111) beat Australia 60 in 18.3 overs ( Mitchell
Johnson 13, Stuart Broad 8/15) and 253 in 72.4 overs ( David Warner 64, Rogers
52, Stokes 6/36) by an innings and 78 runs.
