This Day That Year: Virat Kohli special innings against England
After a horrific Test series in 2014, the Indian captain
Virat Kohli played one of the best knocks during the 2nd Day of the first
Test match against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 2nd August
2018.
England captain Alistair Cook won the toss and decided to
bat first. India was looking down and out but a superb run out by Kohli changed
the course of the game bringing back the visitors into the game. The hosts were
bowled out for 287 runs on the 2nd morning.
The Indian openers Murali Vijay and KL Rahul started off
briskly putting on 50 runs. Kohli came at the crease with scoreboard reading 54
for 2. It was a cautious beginning from Indian captain who played the England
seamers sensibly. India went into the lunch break at 76 for 3.
After the lunch break, India kept losing wickets at regular
intervals. On the other hand, Kohli looked solid with his defensive technique and
leaving the ball outside the off-stump. He reached his fifty off 100 balls. The
visitors went into the tea break at 160 for 6.
In the third session, India lost 2 more quick wickets to be
in big trouble at 182 for 8. Kohli took most of the strike and played with
positive intent. It was an amazing knock by the captain to reach his maiden
Test century on England soil off 172 balls. With Umesh Yadav at the other end,
Kohli faced most of the balls and created pressure on the England bowlers who
spread the field for the Indian captain.
Kohli was superb with his stroke play and made sure that
India did not lag much. Trying to hit a big shot, the Indian captain got out
caught by Broad for a superb 149 off 225 balls with 22 fours and 1 six. His
knock helped India score 274 runs just 13 runs behind the hosts. Kohli and Umesh
Yadav added 57 runs for the final wicket out of which Umesh just scored 1 run.
In 2014 tour of England, Kohli just scored 134 runs in 5
Test matches with the best score of 39. He turned it around during the first Test
against England in 2018 tour. He was simply sensational with his technique against
a strong bowling line up.
