CPL Semi-finals 1: Trinbago Knight Riders crush Jamaica by 9 wickets to qualify for the finals
Thanks to an all-round effort, Trinbago Knight Riders
defeated Jamaica Tallawahs by 9 wickets in the first semi-finals of CPL 2020
played at Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Trinidad on Tuesday.
Trinbago Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard won the toss
and decided to field first. It was an ideal start as Hosein struck off the
fourth ball getting rid of Blackwood with a cracking delivery. The left-arm
spinner Kharry Pierre dismissed Glenn Phillips in the 2nd over to
leave Jamaica in trouble at 2 for 2.
The experiment of Mujeeb Ur Rahman did not work for Jamaica
as he was dismissed by Hosein. After hitting a boundary, Asif Ali played a poor
stroke to give a simple catch to Kieron Pollard leaving Jamaica in tatters at
25 for 4.
At the end of six overs, Jamaica scored 28 for 4. Bonner
played with intent and put the pressure back on the Knight Riders bowlers. On
the other hand, Rovman Powell remained steady. Fawad Ahmed dismissed Bonner
with a googly to put Jamaica under more pressure. Powell and Bonner added 38
runs for the 5th wicket.
The explosive Andre Russell did not contribute much as the
umpire gave the wrong decision. Dwayne Bravo took the catch at slips as the
replays showed it did not hit gloves or bat. Jamaica batting looked ordinary as
Braithwaite and Powell could not hit big shots. Powell smacked the first six of
the innings off Pierre and got out of the very next ball with a simple catch to
Pollard. Braithwaite and Permaul hit lovely boundaries to help Jamaica go past
100. Jamaica Tallawahs posted a modest total of 107 for 7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 108 runs to win, Lendl Simmons got off to a flying start
hitting 2 boundaries off Fidel Edwards bowling. Mujeeb Ur Rahman bought into
the attack dismissed Sunil Narine after being hit for a boundary. Powell tried
his best options Lammichhane and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, but Webster and Simmons made
the batting look easy.
At the end of six overs, Trinbago Knight Riders were well
placed at 42 for 1. Simmons and Webster played with intent making the batting
look easy. Lendl Simmons kept his form going to reach his fifty off 43 balls. Webster
hit the winning runs with a lovely boundary to help Knight Riders win the match
by 9 wickets with 30 balls to spare. Simmons and Webster added unbeaten 97 runs
for the 2nd wicket.
For his 3 for 14 in 4 overs, Hosein was named the man of the
match. The second semi-finals will be played between Guyana Amazon Warriors and
St Lucia Zouks.
Trinbago Knight Riders 111 for 1 in 15 overs (Lendl Simmons 54*, Webster 44*, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 1/18) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 107 for 7 in 20 overs (Bonner 41, Powell 33, Hosein 3/14, Pierre 2/29) by 9 wickets.
