This Day That Year: Afghanistan register a stunning Test win over Bangladesh
It was a remarkable day as Afghanistan registered a stunning
win over Bangladesh in the one-off Test match played at Zahur Chaudhary
Stadium, Chattrgroam on 9th September 2019.
Setting the target of 398 runs in the 2nd
innings, Afghanistan reduced Bangladesh to 136 for 6 at the end of day 4. It
was a perfect start for the visitors as Zahir Khan got the wicket of Shakib AL
Hasan to leave Afghanistan on the brink of a famous win. Rashid Khan produced
the magic by taking the wickets of Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam and dismissed
Soumya Sarkar to give Afghanistan a famous 224 runs win.
Rashid Khan won the toss and decided to bat first on the
first day. It was not an ideal start for the visitors as they lost 3 early
wickets of Zadran, Ihansullah, and Shahidi. Rahmat Shah and Asghar Afghan
steadied the innings for Afghanistan putting on 120 runs for the 4th
wicket. Afsar Zazai and Asghar Afghan partnership ensured that the visitors end the first day in a
strong position at 271 for 5. Rahmat Shah became the first Afghan batsmen
scoring a century in Test matches.
The second day saw Rashid Khan leading from the front and
scored a quickfire half-century. Afghanistan posted 342 runs in the first
innings. The Afghan bowlers kept the pressure right from word go. Rashid Khan
was the pick of bowlers with figures of 5 for 55 in 19.3 overs, Mohammad Nabi
taking 3 for 56, Yamin Ahmadzai 1 for 21, and Qais Ahmed 1 for 22 to bowl out
Bangladesh cheaply for 205.
In their second innings, Afghanistan looked in some trouble
at 28 for 3. Asghar Afghan and Zadran steadied the innings putting on 108 runs
for the 4th wicket. It was a good batting performance by Afghanistan
as they posted 260 runs to set a target of 398 runs.
Afghanistan bowlers looked in great form making life tough
for the Bangladeshi batsmen. The spin trio did most of the damage and reduced
the hosts to 136 for 6. The rain delayed the start of play on day 5 but the weather cleared as Rashid Khan did most of the damage to register a famous win over Bangla Tigers.
They made their Test debut against India at M Chinnaswamy
Stadium, Bangalore in 2018. Since then they have played 4 matches winning 2 and
losing 2 matches.
For his all-round efforts, Rashid Khan was named the man of
the match.
Afghanistan 342 in 117 overs ( Rahmat Shah 102, Asghar
Afghan 92, Taijul Islam 4/116) and 260 in 90.1 overs ( Ibhraim Zadran 87, Asghar
Afghan 50, Shakib AL Hasan 3/58) beat Bangladesh 205 in 70.5 overs ( Mominal
Haque 52, Mossadek Hossain 48*, Rashid Khan 5/55) and 173 in 61.4 overs (
Shakib AL Hasan 44, Rashid Khan 6/49) by 224 runs.
