This Day That Year: Australia create history on England soil

 

Under the captaincy of Tim Paine, the Australian Cricket Team defeated England by 185 runs to win the fourth Ashes Test match played at Old Trafford, Manchester on 8th September 2019. By virtue of this win, Australia retained the prestigious urn on England soil after 2001.

It was a remarkable performance by the Australian side who showed great character after losing the third Test match. Starting the final day on 18 for 2, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, and Mitchell Starc produced some brilliant bowling. Jason Roy and Joe Denly looked solid in the initial period.

Pat Cummins produced a brilliant delivery to knock out Jason Roy. Cummins then got the big wicket of Ben Stokes leaving England in big trouble at 74 for 4. It was a superb bowling effort by the Australian team who kept on the pressure right from word go. England went into the lunch break at 87 for 4.

Soon after the lunch break, Nathan Lyon produced a beauty to dismiss Joe Denly leaving England in big trouble at 93 for 5. Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler kept the Australian bowlers at bay with solid defense. Mitchell Starc got the breakthrough dismissing Jonny Bairstow. Buttler and Craig Overton made sure that England goes into the tea break at 166 for 6.

Josh Hazlewood showed his class by producing a sensational delivery to dismiss Buttler. Soon after Nathan Lyon got rid of Jofra Archer to leave Australia on course for a victory. Craig Overton and Jack Leach kept the Australian bowlers on the backfoot with solid defense.

Marnus Labuschagne was bought into the attack and got the wicket of Jack Leach. The match went right down the wire before Hazlewood dismissed Craig Overton with a review from Overton to register a thrilling win. 

It was an amazing performance by the Australian side. After electing to bat first, Steve Smith scored a brilliant 211, Labuschagne 67, Tim Paine 58 helped Australia declare their innings on 497 for 8. The Australian trio of Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood took all 10 wickets together to bowl out England for 301.

Steve Smith delivered again in the 2nd innings with 82. Wade 34 and Paine 23 off 18 balls helped Australia setting England 383 runs to win. The bowlers did it again to dismiss Rory Burns and Joe Root before stumps.

For his marathon 211* and 82, Steve Smith was named the man of the match award. Australia retained the Ashes by winning the fourth Test match.

Australia 497 for 8 in 126 overs ( Steve Smith 211, Labuschagne 58, Stuart Broad 3/97) and 186 for 6 in 42.5 overs ( Smith 82, Archer 3/45) beat England 301 in 107 overs ( Root 71, Buttler 41, Hazlewood 4/57, Cummins 3/60) and 197 in 91.3 overs ( Denly 53, Buttler 34, Cummins 4/43) by 185 runs.
